Apollo Slant Mens Mountain Bike - 14", 17", 20" Frames is rated out of 5 by 135.Rated 1 out of 5 by Nigel21 from Unfit and don’t buy! Purchased bike October 2017 for my daughter to ride to and from school. Used for approx 60 days and bike needs new brakes and chain..? That’s 120 miles on the road and no off roading and the back wheel buckled making the bike unusable...? Total waste of money and I really should have read the reviews on this bike before. I have written a letter to Halfords today to confirm that this bike is unfit for purpose. Don’t waste your money and In my opinion it’s a dangerous bike as the parts are the cheapest made!Date published: 2018-02-02Rated 2 out of 5 by Mama66 from Cheap bike My son bought this bike in June and had nothing but problems. Really disappointed as he saved his money to pay for it himself. After the first week we had to return it as the handlebars moved while riding, obviously not fitted and checked by Halfords who built the bike. Then the front tube punctured and got wrapped around the tyre and brakes, so had to be cut off and replaced. Thankfully Halfords repaired free of charge. Then today my son was out riding and the brakes seized! Perhaps just bad luck but it has really knocked his confidence riding this bike. Disappointed for him as he saved for this bike himself. I’d be the same if I had issues like this with a new car.Date published: 2017-12-30Rated 1 out of 5 by Jimmya12 from Awful This is likely to be the worst review I have written. I ordered a bike for my son and had a call to say it could not be built before Christmas.Date published: 2017-12-29Rated 3 out of 5 by CK1234 from Kris breaking regularly Hi, I bought bike over a year back thinking it would be good value for money. But now I realised the parts are very cheap. In last six months I had 2 break downs and needed major repairs. To be precise 50% parts on the bike are now new. In terms of cost, I paid for the bike, plus bought 3 year service cover. And each break down costed me around £50/- each. This should give you some idea of the costs. I not a heavy user of the bike a miles daily commute to the station and in the summer bike ride with the kids. I have to give credit the staff are very co operative and have serviced the bike.Date published: 2017-12-16Rated 5 out of 5 by KyrieC from Great value, but know what you are getting! I'm possibly different from the usual purchaser of the Apollo Slant. I've had high-end BMXs for years and ridden high end MTBs so I kind of know how low end the Slant is. However, having moved 7 miles out of town and detesting any reliance on the train or bus network to get me in to work I decided to cycle. Because my bike was going to be left outside, secured to an on-street bike rack for 8+ hours a day I either needed a high tech security system or a cheap bike that wasn't a thief magnet. Fully aware of the pitfalls of buying bicycle-shaped-objects (BSOs) I bit the bullet and ordered the cheapest MTB that Halfords do. This is it, the Apollo Slant. Let's face it, when you look at what you can buy bicycle-wise the Slant doesn't have a single redeeming feature other than its price. Or does it? When I picked it up, it looked quite pretty with its red paintwork gleaming. A year's worth of commuting in all weathers has hardly dulled that. I've had BMXs that would look tatty as soon as they saw sunlight but the Slant keeps looking cheap but cheerful. It's only damage is a few scars from the careless stacking of other bikes in the racks during Summer. there is a bit of rust here and there but a wipe over with a rag and some WD40 hides them immediately. The biggest anti theft feature is the Apollo name I'm certain. That plus there isn't a single component on the bike that's really worth the effort of stealing. Even the seat. It's not bad as cheap seats go but you wouldn't risk getting caught to steal one. I keep a u-lock attached to the bike rack in town(naughty I know) and carry a cheap cable lock on the bike. The wheels are QR so any thief would have to unbolt them and with the budget rims and hubs they aren't exactly desirable. The forks are not up to anything beyond paved roads. However, they do soak up the odd pothole admirably and allow a degree of kerb jumping before they bottom out. The brakes are cheap, the levers especially flexible, but they work. They squeak and need adjustment on a monthly basis but used every day I can't complain. The original pads last a while and cheap aftermarket ones from Halfords actually improve them, but wear out quicker. The levers are the only component I've considered changing before they wear out. However, I haven't ... yet. The frame is hi-tensie steel but actually does have a bit of life to it. I wouldn't ride it off road except maybe on towpaths but on the road it is a bit heavy but not cumbersome. I've ridden more expensive hybrids with alloy frames that were a lot less compliant (although they were lighter.) The gears are very basic and the original cables stretch a bit at first and need adjusting every few days. They eventually settle in though and are basic but absolutely fine afterwards. Gripshifts are my least favourite shifters but these basic bargain ones have worked and kept working without stiffening or losing what basic precision they had. The rear 6 speed cogs are an old fashioned freewheel so it means replacing the entire freewheel assembly instead of just a cassette. They have lasted a year of abuse so far and seen off 3 chains and frankly they aren't that expensive compared to high end 10/11 speed cassettes for example so again I can't complain. The front chainrings have lost some paint and that is it. They show no other signs of wear. On the subject of chains, the original is as good as any other. I clean mine with WD40 and replace them after 3 months of everyday use. At less than £6 a chain it's good sense and a preventative maintenance approach worth taking. The original tyres are OK but after 3 punctures in my first two weeks of commuting I did change the tubes for Continental ones and ran them at slightly higher pressures, and that cut the frequency down significantly. I fitted a pair of Halford's cheap Bikehut semi slicks with puncture prevention when they were sufficiently worn and haven't suffered any punctures for some time (touch wood.) The wheels were never 100% true but they have got no worse through a year of hard riding. The rims are a bit scarred from the brake blocks picking up dust and grit but overall they are faring very well. In terms of value it has been superb. I did factor in replacing the Slant after a year or less but I'm going to persevere with it. Would I replace it with another Slant? Yes, definitely. In fact I'll be keeping an eye out to make sure that Halfords aren't discontinuing it. If they start getting scarce I'll buy another one just for when this one finally expires, though that may be some time yet. Oh yeah, last point, I'm a girl. Though the Slant is advertised as a Man's bike it fits me perfectly, and why shouldn't it? Buy one and get a bargain, but be aware that you will have to do a bit of maintenance as it beds in. Be warned!Date published: 2017-11-19Rated 5 out of 5 by Arush from This is an amazing product ! This Bike I’ve had for a few a months and it’s the best bike I’ve ever owned .
