ReviewsBoardman Mountain Bike Pro Full Suspension 650B 2014 16 16replacement for stolen bike I recently had my trusty Boardman pro hardtail stolen, when I received the insurance settlement I decided I'd upgrade to the full suspension version, I was not disappointed! I picked up the bike on Sunday afternoon and less than a week later I was competing on it in an off road duathlon. The bike handled faultlessly , fantastic brakes and silky smooth gear changing, even after 16k of mud and mayhem. Well done Chris Boardman and well done Halfords, the bike was ready for collection and built up as promised, most impressive! 05 December 201412 month test review So the boardman is now 12 months old. It's a cracking well balanced bike. Only issues I've had have been the bottom bracket which has failed twice. But has been repaired without any argument by the halfords store. Other than that has just been wear and tear. Have covered over 2000 miles on this beauty both at trail centres and in enduro events. Holds its own wherever I take it. Never fails to put a big dirty smile on my face. And as I bought the bike care plan with the bike I ride it completely care free. Is a seriously good investment and it's easily saved me a few hundred quid in tyres and labour. Gearing is well balanced for both accents and decents. Suspension has never let me down or felt inadequate Brakes are exceptional. Only changed the pads once and have had no brake fade. Frame is well balanced and strong. No cracks yet!! Dislikes are the pedals it came with. They went straight in the bin. And the cable routing above the forks was a bit stupid. But with a bit of insulation tape and a slight upgrade on the pedals. She was complete. Can honestly say this bike has exceeded my expectations as has the store I bought it from. Halfords have not only provided me with a great bike but great service too. For a great bike for under 2 grand look no further. Hope this is helpful. Happy riding. 23 November 2014Excellent Set of Wheels!! After much deliberation, trust me I don't drop this sort of money lightly, I took ownership of my new FS650B Pro and have no regrets at all! The build quality, levels of kit and handling are all truly excellent. The only exception were the pedals that were swapped for SPD's after the first ride. There have been some comments about the routing of the cables under the down tube and bottom bracket and in fairness it might not be to the liking of all. However, the gears and brakes work flawlessly even when the cables are caked in mud and this really shouldn't be an issue. This bike is at home climbing, descending and doing technical x-cross trails. If you're looking for a full suspension bike for this sort of money look no further, it's worth every penny, and more! 19 November 2014Unbeatable value and great fun to ride I've been riding this now for 6 months and I liove it. I thought the large may not be big enough for me at 6'3 but it's perfect. The long top tube, short stem and wide bars make for a very stable and comfortable ride. The forks are excellent, the rear shock perfectly adequate. For the price the level of kit is incredible. I do find I have to wear knee pads when riding as the pivot bolts on the top tube are placed just where your knee is likely to go during twisty moves. Also, the very fat seat stays are inclined to rub on my calves. I don't have chunky legs so this may be a problem for beefier riders. The low bottom bracket aids stability through tricky stuff but means more pedal strikes. I might have to change the crankset for a shorter one. Some people might find the 28/36 lowest gear a bit tall. The tyres are disposable - my rear tyre died after 6 rides. I changed the brakes for Shimano (personal preference) before riding this so can't comment on the Avids fitted. 16 September 2014An utterly brilliant piece of kit Several months ago I decided to upgrade my Boardman Team 26" Hard Tail, as although it's a great bike, I was starting to get more adventurous on my rides. After looking at various other options, I went for this... And I have not looked back. I have found myself going further and faster over increasingly technical terrain, and the bike keeps wanting to do more as well. With sheers confidence in the bike, I have found myself hurtling downhill and grinning like a kid whilst jumping and flying over large rocks and stone features. So the above is mainly down to the FS and 650b wheels, but I can also say that the brakes are magnificent as well, with plenty enough clout to stop you dead as soon as you realise you're on the wrong line or when you misjudge an obstacle, The gearing has never failed either... No matter how long, or rocky and rutted the trail / descent has been, there was always a gear to suite it, backed-up by a chain that refuses to come off, no matter how much it's been shaken around. Some comments suggest that the gearing could be different, and yes, on a long flat straight even I can max-out the gearing, but remember,,, This bike is not meant for long flat straights! If you can, get a test ride, or borrow a mate's one... my friend borrowed mine... Less than a month later he'd saved-up and got one! Enough said. 15 September 2014Great Full Sus at Affordable Price Before I bought this bike I was around all the bike shops in Glasgow, I tried out a Whyte & Scott Genius. Very good bikes indeed, coming from a hardtail I wanted to make sure I got a decent FS and I found it at Halfords which did surprise me. You'll pay well over 2k to get a similar bike with a big branded name, however I'm seeing more boardmans on the trails. Anyway, the bike!! As soon as I got on it I knew it was for me, the only problem was getting it out the shop for a test run, Halfords need to sort this out if they want to be taken seriously in the MTB market. I have had it do Glentress & Carron Valley on several occasions and it's performed heroically!! Made the rider better!! Shocks can be set up to suit your own style and they have handled all the trails I have tackled. It also goes up hills ok for a FS, you will always get sag on rear sus on any bike and it's reasonably light. Downhill is where it is at it's best, it's epic on the descent make sure you've taken your bravery pills. One down side are the pedals, they are awful in fact, I changed for magnesium set with pins. But all in all this is small aspect which can be rectified!! I would recommend this product and at this price it's a steal.... 11 July 2014What are you waiting for? Coming from a 26" hardtail the difference this made to my local trail (XC) was light night and day. I think the main advantage is the 650b wheels which help roll over the bumps easier and the rear suspension helps with the comfort. I now find myself going full tilt over terrain I would previously have to brake for which is fantastic. I have only owned the bike a few days so can't comment on reliability but the bike looks fantastic. The only 2 issues I have found is that the bottom bracket is fairly low so I have been catching my pedals a bit but that maybe partly down to being new to a full sus. The second issue is that the lockout on the shock seems to have little to no effect but after riding I'm not sure a lockout is really required. The only modification I have made so far is to replace the pedals but the tyres might need replacing in time but will do for the summer. This is a fantastic bike for a good price and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to anyone as an entry level trail bike. 08 July 2014Durabruce Again the Boardman Brand has pulled one out of the hat with this bike. Bought from Swindon Halfords and with the 10% bank holiday discount, what an amazing price! at least half the price of other branded full sus bikes in this class. I took it up the Cannock Chase trail Centre and completed a lap of Follow the Dog and The Monkey run with ease, hammering the down hill and technical bits with is new 650b wheel size, they really do soak up bumps and smooth's the ride rite out along with its top class Rockshox suspension setup the ride is nimble and planted at the same time, larger wheel size, Its one of thoughts things that's hard to believe until you actually try it. Now for the down side, I know there has to be few, The 28,42t crank setup to steep, should be in my opinion be 24/26 38/39, although the set up will get you climbing you will not be catching any billy goats. the second is the rear suspension linkage, its a bit creaky and knock'y once a little worn in, the 8mm bush bolts used to secure the Rear sus to the frame are to small a diameter for the frame drill outs and do move around under load, this does not effect the ride in the slightest but is just a little annoying. Ergo I marked 4 outa 5 for Quality. So there it is a superb Trail bike only surpassed by its amazing cross country handling. say good by to annoying horsey hoof bumps on you local green lanes. 01 July 2014
