ReviewsHammerite Stonechip Shield Black 600ml 1 1Great Product I used the black version of this product on a replacement fuel tank in a series 3 land rover. Sure,you can use just waxoyl to protect a tank but it makes for a messy installation job as the product stays sticky. , The tank on a landy is located behind the front wheel so gets showered with all the stones and gravel thrown up from the road, I wanted something that would resist the stone chips in the first place rather than 'self heal' afterwards. A new fuel tank comes painted in a semi gloss 'storage primer' but in my case it was well enough adhered so I flatted it all back with an abrasive pad rather than stripped it off. I then used pre paint wipes, dried it and brushed on 2 good coats of Hammerite Satin black leaving about 12 hours between coats.The finish at this point is a very good satin black with minimal brush strokes visible and when it dried it feels like Teflon.I use brushing Hammerite at this stage as it ensures a good paint build up at a reasonable cost. The spray cans are expensive so are saved for the final coat. I then wiped with pre paint wipes and dried it off. It's best to sit the can of stone chip in hot water for ten minutes - this gets the paint nice and runny and warm . Mine sprayed very well and didn't clog once or splatter at all.I also warmed up this garage with a portable radiator so the metal wasn't cold when the paint hit it. I sprayed two coats on all sides except the top (this is under the drivers side seat box and well protected. It also has the fixing points for the sender and fuel pick up so I didn't want a heavy paint build up under the gaskets). The finish at this point is a nice matt with a very fine rough texture to it. I've used other kinds of stone chip schutze in the past that have a very pronounced ripple effect, this does not. I left to dry overnight (seriously use a mask and don't do it in the house it's a VERY fumey product). I then applied a coat of spray Satin Black Hammerite over the whole tank to restore the satin finish to help water run off. The results look really good, I'll let you know in 10 years if it stopped the tank rusting! One more thing, before I painted the tank I did a test on a square of mild steel to make sure the different types of paint are compatible with each other. Had one disaster with Tetraseal stone chip over Hammerite satin, it melted it ! (it's heavily cellulose). All the Hammerite products seem to be compatible which is what you'd expect although some micro crazing occured where the paint inderneath was particularly thick, round weld seams for example, it's just on the surface though. I also game the new fixing bolts a blast of clear Waxoyl to deal with any breaks that may have occured in the paint skin when I bolted it up. 30 January 20121-1 of 1
