Antifreeze

What is Engine Coolant?
Antifreeze is the hidden hero of our car’s engines. If you don’t know how antifreeze works - opens in a new tab, it’s pretty simple. Antifreeze is added to the water in your engine’s cooling system that lowers its freezing point (and raises its boiling point too). It’s why the liquid in your radiator doesn’t freeze when everything else seems to be! You can choose a concentrated coolant that needs to be mixed with water or a ready-mixed one that can be used immediately.

Naturally, you can find both types at Halfords. If you don’t know which antifreeze is best for your car, our tool can help you narrow down your search. You can choose from one of our own range of Halfords’ antifreeze that has been helping drivers for decades or a branded version from leading manufacturer Comma. Engine coolant provides essential protection, so driving while levels are low isn’t recommended.

Antifreeze FAQs
Are antifreeze and coolant the same thing?
They are similar, but not exactly the same. Antifreeze is a concentrated product, normally based on glycol and containing inhibitors. Some types of antifreeze are required to be diluted with water at a suitable concentration before you use it. Once the antifreeze is diluted with water – usually 50/50 – it becomes coolant.
How much antifreeze should I put in my car?
There isn’t one set amount for every car. It depends on the engine size and cooling system, so you usually just top it up to the marked level rather than measuring it out exactly.
How long does antifreeze last?
It doesn’t need changing all the time, but it won’t last forever either. Most cars are fine for a few years, but it’s worth checking it now and then to make sure it’s still doing its job.
