Sony DSX- A500BD Digital Car Stereo is rated out of 5 by 10.Rated 1 out of 5 by Powerslave2326 from Avoid buying this stereo Had this fitted by Halfords in May and had problems with it after a few days.these ranged from the unit not coming on or the dab not working.took it back and it wasn't replaced as they didn't have one in stock. So had the original checked and the connections checked .All was fine for a few weeks until the volume started increasing of it's own accord and the dab no longer works. So it will have to be replaced.Date published: 2017-06-29Rated 1 out of 5 by Picanto10 from Faulty When the radio works it's great, problem is, most of time you have to switch the engine on and off sometimes 3-4 times before you can get it start playing anything! The radio sometimes decides to turn on, sometimes it doesn't. Had it for nearly 5 months, had enough now and is going back. Won't be replacing with new unit due to other reviews having similar problems. Obviously a common fault.Date published: 2017-04-14Rated 1 out of 5 by GPaudi from Had 3 of these as replacements and all had problems! Avoid! Hi Had three of these Sony units fitted to my Audi A3. They all suffered from one or some of the following problems after 3-4 days of working fine. The preset DAB stations disappear, the unit can no longer receive DAB stations, on turning on there is no sound, also on turning on the bluetooth does not work. Sometimes by turning the car off and on this might fix the last two otherwise its disconnect the unit from the power and reset - this might last 3-4 days only though. Ps like a lot of these units this is also not very user friendly and is over complicated. Really disappointed as chose a Sony as I thought the product would be of a high quality. If you look at other reviews on the internet the problems are fairly well documented. Halfords were great though in Redhill particularly Martin. Halfords replaced this unit with a similar Kenwood that has so far been great.Date published: 2017-04-06Rated 1 out of 5 by JCJC74 from Random mute problem, stay away Had this stereo fitted to my car and find the audio mutes as it should when receiving a call (bluetoothed to a Sony smart phone), however it very often will not un-mute when the call is finished, you are left pressing buttons trying to get audio back, only resolution I have found is to switch off for a few minutes and back on again. having googled this problem it seems a common complaint on this radio, sometimes it will mute itself on switch on, infuriating and I will be returning it for a replacement of a different model/brand.Date published: 2017-02-24Rated 1 out of 5 by Jpr89 from Avoid this rubbish I've had three of these within less than a month all with the same fault. Initially bought two for both cars for Christmas, simple enough to install and use, received all the digital radio stations. Within a week one of them would not come on for a good 20 seconds after turning the ignition on, and when it eventually did, no there would be no sound at all despite being tuned into a station. Changing to a different DAB station or to the FM/AM mode made no difference, and the Bluetooth connectivity and auxiliary input wouldn't work either. The only way of getting it to work properly was to turn the engine back off and on again, turning just the unit off and on didn't do anything. Although this doesn't happen all the time, it happened more and more frequently as time went on. Took it back and it was replaced with another unit. Shortly afterwards the second one in the other car started doing exactly the same thing, then after a couple of weeks the replacement in the first car did as well. I've checked and checked everything and it can only be the units that are faulty. Not happy, I paid good money for these.Date published: 2017-02-02Rated 5 out of 5 by JO11YAC from Aftermarket radio The Sony DSX-A500BD radio is marvellous. It is really simple to install and use. Would completely recommend buying. Great product great priceDate published: 2017-01-08Rated 5 out of 5 by Twiggy222 from Great product Easy to use and picks up radio stations well. Good sound. Very happy with it.Date published: 2016-10-04Rated 4 out of 5 by UrbanPeasant from Comprehensive features but complicated Pros: Fully featured: bluetooth, USB & auxillary connections; digital and analogue radio tuners; equaliser & bass boost; connection for steering-wheel controls Cons: Very complicated; very limited codecs (no AAC) for USB files This is a serious piece of digital kit with multiple applications. That also means that it is complicated to manage although the paper manual is comprehensive (and needs to be). Digital receivers are still evolving and Sony seem to have produced the best current effort so far but they do need to be simplified to be more user friendly with intuitive application. Overall this is a good product for it's time: digital reception is good with an internal antenna, the bluetooth NFC connection to my phone for music and calls is simple and works reliably - I can now listen to my favourite USA based internet radio station in the car via a streamed mobile connection which I then connect to the Sony system via bluetooth. All fairly painless. I am disappointed (even annoyed) that the unit does not include an AAC codec for playing music files from USB memory sticks. This means that I have had to convert all my AAC based music files to MP3 to be compatible. This is a serious deficiency. And, the unit is complicated to use. Using the comprehensive manual is essential to manage the operation. So, Sony, good effort and I'm reasonably happy customer but if you can offer more file codecs and simplify the operation I'd give the product 5 stars instead of the three...Date published: 2016-06-07
