  • Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 4 reviewers.
Rated 4 out of 5 by Hits and misses! Have just bought this to replace a Tom Tom GO 720 of around 7 years old. There are good bits and less well thought out bits. The mapping is good and gives more detail than Tom Tom as you are driving, you see local place names nearby on the map, something I have missed on Tom Tom. The Traffic data seems good so far and updates fast, but I have good DAB and FM coverage here. Post code finding is Ok but have already found two places it does not know, also the 'by road and place look up' has holes in its knowledge too. It could not find St Mark's Place in Lincoln, however when I got there it knew where it was an named it, odd! Lack of control on warnings is poorer than Tom Tom, yes you get a beep when over speed, but Tom Tom allows warnings by mph over set speed and a screen black out set at any given speed to warn you, you are well over. This was useful abroad on German auto routes, without pre fiddling. Voice control does not work well for me and has limited use. You cannot up or down the volume settings by voice control which would be useful. Set up is quite intuitive and I have just added full speed camera updates, rather than the pre loaded ones but not tried the areas where they were wrong yet, like road works limit on the M1 gone 6 months ago.. Hopefully they will be updated now I have paid up! . Have not noticed any quicker map drawing and satellite acquiring performance on this unit from my old unit and seen the sometime lag of catchup when going round large roundabouts, but its no issue. Battery life, ..hmnnn, well having cycled it quite a few times I could not get it to charge more than 25% leaving it powered but off in the car overnight, i.e. non ignition switched power. I assumed this was a faulty battery, but Halfords tried it on their mains charger and it did do a full charge, so I bought one and contacted Garmin tech help who emailed back in 3 days (which is loads better than Tom Tom). It seems it is to be expected that the car lead will not give you a full charge, which means that should you take it out of the car you may only get 15 mins or so use unless you have mains charged it to full prior to journey. This is irritating and poor design. The car lead should be able to give it a full charge, without resorting to taking mains charger to hotel room etc. Other download packages seem useful like junction pictures, parking spaces available or weather ahead, however they only work in certain countries and that is a disappointment, so did not purchase as of little use at the moment. Am about to drive to southern Spain and that is why I decided to upgrade, things still to learn and things will miss, especially the Tom Tom Home pc user friendly planning and upgrade site which worked well. This unit uses apps mainly from your cell phone, which is fine and works OK, but talking to a PC or laptop is easier and Garmin's is very limited in what you can do on a PC. Some of this may matter you , some may not, but digital DAB based traffic should be a great improvement and if it is in an area where DAB is not available it reverts to FM which is also built in. Also uses the phone internet and apparently the expected use is low as around 7 Mb /month for a couple of hours use a day according to web sites, though Garmin could not tell me! All in a clever unit and to me different, but some things could be improved on and others are really good! Its a minefield upgrading hence I have gone into some detail as you only find this info when you own it! Hope it helps! 19 June 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by My New Garmin Sat Nav is a delight to use. My first Garmin Sat Nav was purchased in 2008 and has given me excellent service. My recent purchase is a DriveSmart 50 LMT-D which has lifetime updates of traffic and full Europe maps. It is very easy to use and gives a clear display and voiceover prompts. I have used the DriveSmart in Umbria Italy, it finds even the most remote locations (and some of our destinations have been hilltop towns on single track roads). I particularly like the 'real view' of a motorway slip road a few hundred metres before exiting the motorway. This is an excellent product and I thoroughly recommend it -is worth the higher price range. Halfords and Garmin gave me excellent advice before my purchase? MJK of Derby. 08 June 2016
Rated 3 out of 5 by Too much Lag It lags so much, does not give instructions early enough especially within town - where it is really necessary, for example if a turn is missed it takes ages to update location & maps. It goes blank for a while if a direction is missed. Speed limits indicated are spurious at times, fortunately on the lower side. Earlier I had Garmin Nuvi 2995, which is better than this expensive piece of kit, I feel. Planning to return. 29 May 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent sat nav Updated as I do every couple years, always garmin and this one hasn't disappointed so far. Set up is really easy especially if u have used them before as the website allows you to just transfer al settings etc. Good clear display and quite easy to use once get the hang of it. Would highly reccomend 16 May 2016
