WHAT IS AN ELECTRIC BIKE?

Electric bikes use a combination of pedal and electric power to make riding easier and more enjoyable. When the rider pedals, the electric motor kicks in and does some of the work, either automatically or at the rider's demand.

BENEFITS OF RIDING AN ELECTRIC BIKE

You should consider buying an electric bike if you are a commuter or want to invest in a green and affordable method of transport. Benefits include:

  • Assistance with pedalling - allowing you to cover longer distances or carry heavy loads like shopping
  • Easier to ride uphill
  • Pulling away from junctions is made safer as you can get up to speed more easily
  • Cost effective - no tax, insurance, MOT or congestion charges
  • Less time sat in traffic jams
  • Environmentally friendly - no emissions
  • Some electric bikes are foldable, for ease of use on public transport
  • Arrive at work less flustered
  • Fun to ride!

Halfords sells a range of Urban Mover electric bikes that offer all of the above advantages.

FEATURES TO LOOK OUT FOR WHEN BUYING AN ELECTRIC BIKE

  • Battery Type - all electric bikes sold at Halfords feature high quality Panasonic Lithium Ion batteries. These are lighter and last longer than other battery types, such as those made with sealed lead acid or nickel metal hydride.
  • Motor Configuration - Urban Mover electric bicycles contain rear wheel mounted hub motors. These offer better traction and balance than front-mounted motors. Urban Mover models also use brushless motors, which are more efficient than brushed motors and maintenance-free.

DISTANCE COVERED BY ELECTRIC BIKES

The distance that you can go on an electric bicycle depends on weather conditions, cycling conditions, battery charge, battery condition and rider weight.

Depending on the model you buy, the maximum range of Urban Mover electric bikes varies from around 30km to 80km on one charge.

ELECTRIC BIKES AND THE LAW

In Great Britain, electric bikes are covered by the Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles Regulations. These state that:

  • The motor must not be able to propel the bike when it's going faster than 15mph. You can still pedal above this, as on a normal bike - the motor will kick back in when you reach below 15mph again
  • The maximum weight of the bike must not exceed 40kg. All Urban Mover electric bikes sold at Halfords weigh around 20kg on average
  • The maximum power output of the motor musn't be higher than 200 watts
  • You must be 14 years old to ride an electric bike on a public highway

Our electric bikes meet the above conditions and therefore do not need a licence, tax, insurance or MOT.

MAINTENANCE AND ACCESSORIES FOR YOUR ELECTRIC BIKE

Electric bikes offer an ideal commuting solution and are a sustainable mode of transport. They are cheap to run - the only costs involved are the electric used to charge the bike, and maintenance costs which are around the same as a normal bike.

If you're going to spend a decent amount on an electric bike then it's worth considering bike locks to help keep it safe. Also, if you are going to commute in the dark hours then don't forget your bike lights, bike helmet and hi vis clothing.

Staff in your local Halfords will be happy to advise you on any aspect of riding, maintaining and accessorising your electric bike.
