Car Seats & Child Travel
Why does my child need a car seat?
The average child travels 5,000 miles per year in a car.
Child car seats, booster seats and booster cushions offer vital protection for a safer journey. Using adult seatbelts alone, for children under 135cm in height, will put your child at higher risk of injury, in particular to the chest, lungs, abdomen and spine, in comparison to a purpose built child car seat or booster.Close
How do I choose the right child seat?
It's not just the age of your child that you have to consider when choosing a child car seat.
You will also have to consider their weight and height, and which seat provides the most secure fit in your car. You should also think about whether your baby or child will be taking long or short journeys and if you will need to transfer your child car seat from one car to another.
Halfords has over 2,800 trained child car seat specialists in stores nationwide to help you choose the right seat for your child and your car. Take a look at our online guide to child seats for more information.Close

We will then take you through our 16-point fitting administration safety checklist so that you can drive away with complete peace of mind.Close
At what age can my child stop using a booster seat?
Only children aged 12 or over or who are over 135cm (4'5") in height can stop using a booster seat.
However they must of course then use adult seatbelts or restraints when travelling in a vehicle.Close
Can I move my child car seat to another car?
In theory, yes, but firstly you must ensure that your child car seat is compatible with the other car you intend to put it into.
A safe child car seat will rest firmly and securely on the car seat with hardly any forwards or sideways movement when it is fitted to the manufacturer's instructions. If you have lost the instructions, contact your child seat manufacturer to check if they can provide a copy. Make sure that the seat can be fitted safely in the other car well in advance of the trip, following the instructions carefully.
If the child car seat is not safe or it will not fit in a different car then you should not use it to transport your child in that car - you will need to find another child seat. If you take the child seat out of your car to put in another car, make sure you fit it properly every time you put it in the other car and every time you put it back in your car.Close
What size roof box do I need?

Do all roof boxes fit onto all roof bars?
Yes, any roof box will fit onto any car roof bars as long as it is the right roof bars for the car.

How can I keep my car secure?

» Once home, don't leave your car keys on a hall table or windowsill next to the front door.Close
What do I need when travelling with my pet?
When travelling with your pet in your car, always put your pet in a suitable pet carrier or cage or install a dog-guard for larger animals, to restrict them to one section of your car.
Then secure the carrier using your car's passenger restraint system or secure your pet with a special pet harness. Do not let your pet hang their head out the open window while the car is in motion, install a pet window grill instead. Also, don't forget to take along some items that are familiar to your pet, such as a favourite toy or blanket, and a supply of food and water in pet travel bowls to help put them at ease.Close

I want a really waterproof tent - how do I know I'm getting one?
Look for 3 things:
» Hydrostatic Head: The majority of tents are made from polyester fabric with a waterproof polyurethane coating applied to the inner surface. There are different thicknesses of coating available, giving differing levels of waterproofing. The level of waterproofing is recorded as the hydrostatic head (hh) of the coated fabric. The hydrostatic head is the water pressure that the fabric can withstand, measured by the height of a column of water that the fabric can support until the first droplets start to come through. The higher the hydrostatic head the more waterproof the fabric. An entry level tent with a hydrostatic head of less than 1,000mm, is really only showerproof. For a tent to be classified as waterproof it must have a hydrostatic head of at least 1,500mm. Premium tents will use flysheet fabrics with a hydrostatic head of 2,000mm and above.
» Taped seams: The stitch holes in every seam in the flysheet are sealed by the application of a heat sealing tape after sewing. This taping is essential to ensure that the waterproofing of the fabric is not compromised by water coming in through the stitch holes. Repeated tension on certain key seams may eventually cause the stitch holes to stretch, any water ingress can be prevented by applying a seam sealer. Remember to allow sufficient time (as much as 48 hours) for the seam sealant to be completely dry before you can pack the tent away.
» Re-proofing: Although flysheet fabrics are resistant to ultra violet light (UV), ultimately exposure to the sun will gradually fade the colours, degrade the waterproofing and the strength of the fabric. Reproofing not only restores the waterproofing of the fabric but also helps protect it from UV degradation. We recommend that you reproof your tent every two years. For best results clean the flysheet with a specialist cleaner before reproofing, please see the Fabsil range for more detailsClose
What are the benefits of tension adjusting straps?
Our Urban Escape Tents all have tension adjusting straps at the corners of the tent.
These make it really easy to pitch the tent with all of the fabric panels correctly tensioned and wrinkle free.
They also have tension adjusting straps on the base of each of the tent poles, this again really helps you to ensure that the tent is pitched with all of the fabric panels correctly tensioned and wrinkle free.Close
Are your tents easy to pitch?
Generally, yes, though pitching a tent does become easier and quicker the more you do it.
The length of time it takes to put up your tent will depend on its size, but generally, most tents can be erected in 10 to 45 minutes, when following the instructions provided. Our Urban Escape tent range also features colour-coded poles to make putting up your tent much easier. Most of our tents have pitch times included as part of the features and benefits, to help you make your decision.Close
Do I need an additional groundsheet?
All our tents come with a ground sheet.
To protect you even more from bugs and draughts most of our tents come with attachable groundsheet in the bedrooms, or for the entire tent, so look on our product pages to see if the one you like has this feature, or look out for this detail when you compare tents. We also sell a range of separate groundsheets if you want spares.Close
What are the benefits of attachable rising groundsheets?
Fitted groundsheets are sometimes sewn to the inner tents.
The Urban Escape tents all use attachable rising groundsheets that are initially fixed in position by hooks and elastics. The rising sides are then secured to the inner tents and the sidewalls with a combination of elastic loops with toggles and hook and loop tape. To avoid any trip hazards when using the tent doors, the rising side section of the groundsheet at the door can be lowered and safely pegged down to the ground.Close
