Car Seats & Child Travel
Why does my child need a car seat?
The average child travels 5,000 miles per year in a car.
Child car seats, booster seats and booster cushions offer vital protection for a safer journey. Using adult seatbelts alone, for children under 135cm in height, will put your child at higher risk of injury, in particular to the chest, lungs, abdomen and spine, in comparison to a purpose built child car seat or booster.Close
How do I choose the right child seat?
It's not just the age of your child that you have to consider when choosing a child car seat.
You will also have to consider their weight and height, and which seat provides the most secure fit in your car. You should also think about whether your baby or child will be taking long or short journeys and if you will need to transfer your child car seat from one car to another.
Halfords has over 2,800 trained child car seat specialists in stores nationwide to help you choose the right seat for your child and your car. Take a look at our online guide to child seats for more information.Close

At what age can my child stop using a booster seat?
Only children aged 12 or over or who are over 135cm (4'5") in height can stop using a booster seat.
However they must of course then use adult seatbelts or restraints when travelling in a vehicle.Close
Can I move my child car seat to another car?
In theory, yes, but firstly you must ensure that your child car seat is compatible with the other car you intend to put it into.
A safe child car seat will rest firmly and securely on the car seat with hardly any forwards or sideways movement when it is fitted to the manufacturer's instructions. If you have lost the instructions, contact your child seat manufacturer to check if they can provide a copy. Make sure that the seat can be fitted safely in the other car well in advance of the trip, following the instructions carefully.
If the child car seat is not safe or it will not fit in a different car then you should not use it to transport your child in that car - you will need to find another child seat. If you take the child seat out of your car to put in another car, make sure you fit it properly every time you put it in the other car and every time you put it back in your car.Close

What is a baby travel system?
A baby travel system is a pre-packaged set that includes a baby stroller, a child car seat/baby carrier and a car seat base.
The child car seat has a handle that allows it to be used as a baby carrier. The car seat base can be seat-belted into your car, then the car seat/baby carrier snaps onto the base for travel, making it easier for you to move your baby from car to stroller all while strapped in to the same carrier.
Travel systems are particularly handy for sleeping babies, since they eliminate the need to remove the sleeping baby from the car seat. The car seat/baby carrier also snaps onto the stroller frame for added convenience.Close

What pushchair is right for my child?
You must think carefully about what you and baby need before you choose which pushchair, pram or stroller to buy.
If your baby will be travelling by car a lot you need to consider which pushchair will fit in your car boot (you may need to change your car!), or you may decide that a travel system, where you pushchair converts to a car seat is your best option. Similarly if you use public transport you'll need a buggy that is lightweight and is easy to fold up and carry.
If you live in the country, you may need a more robust 3-wheeler pushchair to cope with all terrain, but if you're a town dweller, you may prefer a 2-in1 pushchair - a more traditional type that converts from a pram to a pushchair as your baby gets older. You also need to consider whether your pushchair will fit through standard doorways, has enough storage room for your baby's things and whether it is safe, comfortable (for both you and your baby) and value for money.Close
What is the current child seat law?
Improved child car seat safety legislation was introduced in September 2006.
It stated that ALL children up to the age of 12 or up to 135cm (4' 5") in height (whichever they reach first) must be restrained in an appropriate child seat or booster seat when travelling in a vehicle. Drivers currently face a £30 fixed penalty notice or a fine of up to £500 if they fail to comply with the law.Close
