What does an oil filter do?

Your car’s oil filter is the component that removes dirt and debris from your vehicle's oil. Keeping the engine clean is one of oil's main functions, so contaminants naturally accumulate as the lubricant passes repeatedly through the engine. Oil is also there to lubricate the engine parts that keep the car moving. Any unfiltered particles in the oil can permanently damage the engine and cause a breakdown, so it's important to keep it clean with a fully working oil filter.

How often should I change the oil filter?

Most manufacturers recommend changing the engine oil filter and the oil at the same time. How often this is needed will depend on the vehicle's make, model, age and condition. Most newer cars typically need an oil and filter change after 6,000 miles or six months. However, older cars may need a new oil filter after clocking up just 3,000 miles.

Signs you need to replace the oil and oil filter

  • 12 months or 6,000-8,000 miles (whichever sooner) since the last change
  • Warning lights on your dashboard
  • Dirty or smoky exhaust fumes
  • Reduced fuel efficiency
