Never again!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Absolute rubbish, applied to a mudguard I had prepped, had to sand it all back off and buy some more lacquer from a local motor factors. Do not buy at any cost!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 16 June 2012
Rubbish This is absolute rubbish… I have used this for a restoration on a motorcycle and the paint chips so easily, I’ve had to touch up the paint so many times. And today I went out to clean the bike and all the lacquer has melted off the bike and bubbled due to the hot weather we have had. So now I have several hundred pounds of work to do. 01 June 2012
Ruined my alloys I've spent ages refurbishing my alloys using spray paint I've bought from B&Q and they looked amazing. I then went to finish them off by using this lacquer and it has completely ruined them. The lacquer has come out all patchy and really scaly which has just messed everything up. I will be taking this back for a refund. 04 April 2012
Halfords clear lacquer After 1 x 600ml can and 4 coats did not have clear lacquer result, still light orange peel affect. (amateur look) After 2 more sprays with second can decided to create thick layer with last coat covered whole area in thick layer in short succession until I had sheen covering full area rather than orange peel affect.(used 2/3 of can) Lacquer dries quite quick but watch for running.( Also when shaking can on respray, keep can away from vehicle, find odd drips, fly off land on paint work!) Once dry this coat almost identical to original lacquer. recommend blend in to original lacquer with quality car polish, wet and dry's (even fine papers) found too harsh for this process. Polish does act as very gentle abrasive will remove excess paint spray. 18 May 2011
clear lacquer I have just discovered your lacquer whilst looking for a clear coat for my water based airbrush paints, just like to say that this a realy good product, After years of using cellulose products that orange peel and take forever to dry. Your paints now dry very quickly and cover realy nicely. The only thing i will say is that they have to be used very sparingly otherwise they WILL run if put on to thickly. Be patient and use lots of light coats. When using cellulose paints it had to be put on realy thick to get nice shine then they would run, with these paints you dont have to apply them thick. I am now using them on my motorcycle and are working realy well. Halfords please dont change the formula you have it right at last. 12 September 2010
Waste of money The lacquer is thin and goes on unevenly. After doing a nice job of painting where my car had been scratched I was disappointed to find the lacquer finish patchy. I'll now have to sand it off and re-spray it. I currently don't know whether to try this again, as I still have most of the can left, or go and get some that I know will work. On the plus side where the lacquer has gone on evenly it has done a nice job. 05 July 2010
It's really very Useful. I have painted many scuffs on my Car bumper and its exactly matching the Car original colour. 03 September 2009

I had a reasonably good finish before lacquering (2 coats primer, 2 coats (or was it 3?) of colour (dark blue, non-metallic, non-pearl), then sanded down as per instructions with 1200 paper). Applied 3 coats of lacquer, but it's a consistently matt finish. Does it somehow need polishing up? Or does it require more layers of lacquer to make for a gloss finish? (Or perhaps sanding again with 1200 before the last layer of lacquer?). Am a bit of a newbie to this.

Hi, thanks for your interest in Halfords Clear Lacquer 500ml.
Three coats of lacquer should be easily enough to achieve a deep gloss finish.
Clear lacquer (or high gloss finishes) are sensitive towards humid or damp conditions, and will absorb moisture on drying. This will be exaggerated if heavy coats are applied.

To rectify (ensure the existing paint is fully dry), lightly flat with 1200 grade wet & dry paper and overcoat with a further 2 to 3 light coats of lacquer allowing at least 15 minutes between coats. Ensure the ambient conditions are dry and relatively warm, i.e.15 deg C+.

Yes Halfords Clear Lacquer 500ml can be used on wood / MDF. Depending on the coating on the MDF an adhesion aid may be required (156680). The lacquer is non-yellowing.

Rocker covers don't usually get that hot, normally around 80C. The
standard lacquer should be OK for this application.

Answer:
Primer is (2 - 3 coats) 15 mins between each coat, then left overnight before black
Black is "plasti-kote" (3-4 coats) upto 30 mins between each coat. left overnight before lacquer
Thin coats each time
never wrinkled going from primer to black but it does from black to lacquer

Answer:
Is it all Halfords standard paint/primer or wheel paint that's being used? If so they are all acrylic so they are 100% compatible with each other.
If its another brand of paint it may not be compatible, particularly if its an alkyd of some type.
How many coats of primer and black have been used?
How long was left between each coat?
If lots of very thick coats have been applied it could be a case of solvent entrapment but this tends to cause pin-holing rather than wrinkling.
