Plastic Primer I use a lot of this not for car body work but for model boat building as a primer before top coat Top paint 14 October 2011
Does what it says on the tin For a novice trying to repair and respray a platicised car bumper, this worked well. Easily mixed, value for money and sprayed evenly. Used as a base for a metallic spray that subsequently covered well. Would recommend with the matching product from Halfords (got the metallic spray made up by Halfords, very pleased with its match to my car colour code). 30 March 2011
Good stuff New to painting? this primer is really forgiving. Put a coat on leave a few minutes and it will take another. 13 July 2009

I have repaired some rust on my car, and was advised to purchase some primer to apply to the bare metal and filler that I've applied. So I grabbed a tin of "Plastic Filler Primer" assuming that it is the primer to go on top of the filler, and Plastic is just the name of the ingredient of the primer itself.
But reading the instructions it dawns on me that in fact it is intended to be applied only to plastic bodywork, not metal. Is this right? If so then presumably it would not work properly if I put it on metal?
It is a bit frustrating because it does not say on the tin or this web page that it is NOT for metal, so there was nothing to alert me to my mistake. And it is Sunday afternoon and the local shop is closed and my car is sitting there all patched and ready for paint which is not forthcoming.
Please advise thanks.

Answer:
It worked for me on a bumper which was plastic based - some overspray stuck very well to metal!
Worst case scenario is that you have to rub down again, I guess.

Answer:
The primer we suggest using after you have carried out a repair is the Halfords primer in grey/white/red, alternatively if the surface is uneven we recommend the filler primer which is easier to sand and get a smoother finish.(Apply in light coats and sand in between).
The plastic primer your customer has used incorporates a "flexing aid" and is intended for bumpers, plastics etc which have a much higher contraction/expansion rate. The plastic primer can be used on metal but a possible problem is the top coat that you apply over the plastic primer will not flex as much as the primer, and possibly cause cracking on the finished surface.
