5 litre fuel can Dohhhhhhh, it didn't come with any fuel in it. I had to take it to a garage to put some in it. Now I'm gonna make sure there's some in it. So if I run out of fuel on the motorway, I won't be in it! 23 September 2011

Fuel Cans Safety

I was recently brought one of your plastic fuel cans to use for my petrol mower. Can you please tell me if I should tighten the cap fully when storing it? I left it in the shed out of direct sunlight and it expanded alarmingly in the heat of the day. However, if I was to leave the cap loosened, would fumes be escaping?

Answer: 
This can, I believe is for diesel and hence a possible reason for not having a small vented cap. My 5 gal (portable?) petrol tank certainly has one. It should be ok cracking the screwed sealing cap bearing in mind that you will be storing the fuel responsibly at home normally. However if it is in the boot of your car then it would be irresponsible to loosen any sealing device.

All liquids will expand and contract in heat, it is better from a health & safety perspective that the cap is securly tightened - It needs to be stored in a cool location out of direct sunlight and ideally in a ventilated area to avoid a build up of heat (eg an enclosed garden shed can get very hot in the day, so is probably not suitable)
