The Halfords 4x4 Spare Wheel Cycle Carrier is a secure way for 4x4 drivers to carry bikes on the rear mounted spare wheel . The carrier is simple and easy to fit onto your spare wheel, by firstly removing any wheel cover you may have and ensuring the maximum dimensions of the tyre are 70cm in diameter and 25cm in width.

The spare wheel is protected by the carriers high density foam pads. And the carrier itself is also adjustable to fit around centre, left or right hand mounted spare wheels.

Fitting Do's and Don'ts

Positioning

  • Adjust cycle support arms such that cycles are positioned centrally at the rear of the vehicle
  • Mount the carrier directly to the spare wheel
  • Do not open rear door when cycles are fitted
  • Do not fit over hard or fabric wheel covers
  • Do not drive "off road" with cycle carrier fitted

Side Strap

  • Position the side straps so that they fit centrally around the circumference of the spare tyre

Bottom Straps

  • Where possible, thread the bottom strap through the spare wheel mounting bracket

Additional Information

Important:

To ensure full compliance with road traffic regulations the use of a lighting board/number plate is required if your vehicle's existing lights/number plate are obscured by this carrier. This is particularly important for vehicles with high mounted rear lights.

Really good, but one small problem... The rack works really well with a Land Rover Freelander, and on the move stays completely in place. However the one problem with it is that the way it is constructed means that you can't lock it to the car in any way - granted the bikes can be secured to the car, but it wouldn't take much for someone to pinch the carrier off of the wheel when parked up - meaning that you have to take it off and put it in the car itself when out on the bikes - not ideal, but still a good carrier. 01 June 2011

Very pleased with this purchase My 1st purchase online from Halfords was easy to order & was ready to be collected at the till when I went to collect the next day. This 4x4 2 bike carrier fits my Freelander 2002 & is suitable to carry (30kg) an adult & child bike. Being a female & not very strong even I can fit & use this item. superb product I realy needed a cycle carrier; I go every weekend off into the moors and dales, the bikes can fit in the car with the wheels off but they get so muddy. Does the job brilliantly! We purchased this bike carrier after months of maneouvering the bikes in and out of the back of our Freelander. It fits well and even without an attachment, we manage to get one ladies and one mens mountain bike on the carrier easily. As it was on offer at the time of purchase it was really good value aswell. 07 July 2010
value for money Purchased this cycle carrier at a reduced price and was very pleased with it . It required no assembly and was really easy to fit. would definately recommend this product, not to sure I would have purchased it at the full price. 25 April 2010

Using the Halfords 4x4 Spare Wheel Cycle Carrier whilst towing depends on a number of variables as all cars, caravans and trailers are different. In general the answer is yes but please be aware of the following:
The distance between the spare wheel and the caravan/trailer, (Gas bottle holders sometimes fitted to the A-frame greatly reduce this.) Turning circles can be limited by fitting 2 bikes between the spare wheel and caravan. Also, please be aware of the jockey wheel post interfering with the items being carried. The nose weight on your vehicle will increase by up to 35kg.

how do you off set the rack to fit to spear wheel that is "off set" on the rear door to the drivers side.

I measured the Pajero spare wheel to be 75cm diameter (25 deep) whereas your standards seem to be 70cm. I would think the Pajero is a standard 4x4 so just want to query that.

The maximum dimensions of the tyre and wheel that the Halfords 4x4 Spare Wheel Cycle Carrier will fit are 70cm diameter x 25cm width. There are approximately 8 tyre sizes used for the Mitsubishi Pajero and only one is suitable for this carrier. The other 7 have diameters which are too big and 4 of these have widths that are too big. We recommend either a roof mount or tow ball mounted cycle carrier but please check the nose weight of your vehicle.
