when I insert the connection into the air bed and press down on the pump, the air empties in the pump and the pump does not fill up again to enable me to press down on it again.

Answer: 
The quickest way to deflate an air bed is to remove the bung to allow the majority of the air to escape before squeezing it to forcibly remove the remaining air.
