Good specs for the money, slightly annoying OS I bought this primarily because it was the cheapest media player I could find that supported both and SD card and a rear USB port, and I'm pretty happy with it notwithstanding a few quirks. First off, the good things. The sound is awesome -- the "Max sound" feature actually lives up to its name, and provides great depth even at low volumes. The overall output is so much better than the factory-fitted CD player I had before, it's not funny -- I can't believe it's the same speakers in the car. The "Music zones" function is likewise a great idea (I'm surprised more players don't come with this). The ease of scrolling through folders (press the folder button, then flick through your albums using the volume wheel) is much simpler than using the conventional album buttons on other stereos. And having the SD slot and the rear USB port is brilliant if you want to separate your music collections, and then leave both a card and thumb-drive permanently attached. Now the bad stuff. Most annoyingly, although the player can happily display ID3 tag info, you can't display this info by default or even keep it displayed -- the device instead will revert to the track number and the folder number after displaying the tag info for a few seconds. This is pretty ugly, not to mention archaic ... but considering most of the time you'll be listening to the stereo your eyes will be on the road, I guess it doesn't matter much in practice. There's also a unbelievably small limit on the number of files that can be played on any media device -- the player can only read 999 files (which given the size of removable storage these days and the size of most music libraries, is a serious limitation). Of course, having both an SD card slot and a rear USB slot means that it's good for nearly 2000 tracks in reality ... but still, I don't know of any other manufacturer that imposes such a small limit on the number of files. Finally, the lighting on the unit is really bright and there's no way to dim the lights (the settings menu is pretty much non-existent) ... but again, it's a minor concern. I should add that I bought this player at half-price, and this review is written with that price in mind. At full retail price, there may be better options available (although SD-card compatible players still seem to be scarce ... no idea why!) 21 March 2013
