How to maintain bike chains

New bike chains are supplied with extra links to allow for bikes with oversized chainrings and sprockets, so the first step is to determine the correct length to fit your bike, then follow the instructions below:

Halfords Difficulty Rating

Chain 1

1) Curl the chain around the largest chainring and the largest sprocket, and
through the rear gear mech. 'Join' the ends and then 'add' two links to this length. If you have a bike with a large number of gears you may need to 'add' four links.
Chain 2

2) Remove any surplus links.
Chain 3

3) For standard chains, set the chain against the tool guides as before. Start with the punch wound all the way back, then wind the rivet in.
Chain 4

4) With Shimano chains, push the spare rivet through both links with your finger until the end of it just pokes out of the opposite chain side plate. Then take the chain tool and wind the rivet through until the groove in the end pokes out of the other end of the rivet. Break this piece off with your pliers.
Chain 5

5) Apply generous dabs of lubricant to the chain and wipe the excess off with a cloth.

A bike chain will last longer if you maintain it by degreasing it regularly and reapplying fresh lubricant. A good-quality, liquid lubricant such as our Bikehut range should be used after degreasing. Remember to re-apply lubricant before every ride.
