Choosing the right bike

Before you buy a bike you have to think about what you will be using it for. There are many types of bikes available, so it is important you get the correct one. Also, you need to get the right size, see our Choose the right size bike page for information to help you select exactly the right bike.

All Terrain/Mountain Bikes

An All Terrain or Mountain bike (abbreviated ATB or MTB) is a bicycle designed for mountain biking, either on dirt trails or other unpaved environments. Road bicycles just aren?t rugged enough for such terrain. Mountain bikes have wider tires than a average road bike for extra traction and shock absorption.

Extra features to look for:

Lightweight aluminium frame - makes riding easier and acceleration faster

Front suspension - gives a smoother ride

Dual suspension - for ultimate off-roading

Number of Gears - more gears make riding uphill easier and flat riding faster

Disc brakes - provide ultimate off-road braking performance in all conditions

Hard Tail Bikes:

Most hard tail bikes frames are made of aluminium such as the Freeride AT series. Because of the hard framework, as you push through the gears, all the energy is transferred into momentum. This bike is built for speed, and being so rigid it is a strong and powerful bike with front suspension to ease all high speed bumps. Built mainly for road surfaces, you can take it on dirt aswell.

Full Suspension Bikes:

Full suspension bikes are built to handle impact. They are ideal for riding through mountains or over huge hills. Downhill, you will pick up alot of speed, but due to the rear suspension, alot of the energy through pedalling is lost. Ideal bikes for teenagers and adventurers.

Road and Sports Bikes:

Drop-handlebar bikes are designed for speed, and speed alone. The lower riding position means that the air flow is less restricted enabling you to create and maintain alot more speed than on an average bike.
