Ian Rumgay, European communications manager for TripAdvisor, told the research team there is an "urgent need for huge investment" in the railway system and Londoners will have to fund it.

Oyster card fares are set to increase - by as much as 80p on a weekly bus pass to £13.80.

In theory rising travel costs could prompt more people to take up cycling - this mode of transport has become more popular in the last few months - confirmed by healthy sales figures from bike specialist Halfords.

Mr Rumgay suggested other countries "seem to manage to provide an economic transport system without charging as much as London does".

"It is in urgent need for huge investment and that money has to come from somewhere and people are going to have to pay for it."
