Research by a car insurance firm has found that over three-quarters of drivers (78 per cent) are unsure of the Highway Code's rules on headlight usage.

The study by esure also indicated that 54 per cent of British road users admitted to forgetting to turn on their headlights at least once, with Northern Irish motorists being the worst culprits at 65 per cent.

Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure, said that it can be too easy to forget turning on headlights, especially after making a stop.

He added: "Drivers must be extra vigilant during the winter - and especially in areas where councils have turned off street lighting - to ensure they are driving with the correct lights at all times."

Halfords offers plenty of solutions to keep cyclists and pedestrians in the light when it comes to being out and about in the cold winter evenings.

The Halfords Standard Bike Light Set, featuring both front and back lights, is reduced from 11.99 to just 7.99 and the Maglite Solitaire AAA Silver Torch is now 7.99, originally 15.99.ADNFCR-1635-ID-18830318-ADNFCR
