Set to see a choice of three outputs for the new 2.2-litre diesel engine - 185ps, 163ph and 125ps - there are also planned to be 170ps, 147ps and 120ps output petrol engines.

One of the safety features on 15 Mazda6 models - from the TS2 upwards - will be the lane-change Rear Vehicle Monitoring System.

This will detect and warn the driver of an approaching vehicle, before they have a chance to mistakenly change lane.

Mark Cameron, Mazda UK sales director, said: "With this revised new Mazda6 line-up we anticipate growing our share of the large family/business car segment sales next year."

"Compared to last year, the second generation Mazda6 is already taking an increased share of the segment," he added.

According to the car maker, the new Mazda6 diesel is set to achieve between 49.6 mpg and 51.4 mpg in combined conditions, whilst producing between 147g/km and 149g/km - depending on the model - meaning placement in tax bad C.
