A study has revealed 37 per cent of people said they would choose a pet instead of having children.
Conducted by PetPlan, the research showed one in 20 married couples admitted to having already purchased a cat or dog in preference to starting a family, while 17 per cent decided on their purchase as they didn't like returning to an empty house.
A spokesman for the company said the public is treating pets more like members of family than ever before.
He went on to say: "We are even naming them as we would our children. Our records show, the way we name our pets often reflects what is happening in society."
"We had a customer register two kittens named Credit and Crunch!"
The survey also found Molly, Alfie, Charlie, Max and Willow made up the top five of the ten most popular pet names.
