While some choose to jazz up their motor with a car styling and accessories kit, others may display their individuality with a personalised number plate and DVLA is hoping to set a new sales record for these markings this year.

Monthly year-on-year sales are on the increase, meaning the government department has voiced hopes of a bumper festive period.

According to marketing manager Damian Lawson, plates make a great Christmas present for motorists as they are a "gift for life".

"We really are extremely optimistic we are able to raise the bar yet again in terms of sales for December," he said.

The 10-series goes on sale on December 1st, something DVLA claimed has sparked "immense interest".

In related news, vehicle firm Carcraft warned drivers to be wary of cloning scams.

The crimes see crooks steal number plate information, which can lead to speeding and parking fines being sent to innocent parties.
