Birdwatchers will soon be able to ride their mountain bikes down to an RSPB nature reserve from Southport, it has emerged.

Speaking to the Southport Visitor, Councillor Fred Weavers suggested that people may soon ask why this cycle path down to the birdwatching spot was not constructed sooner.

He was quoted as saying: "This is a real chance to develop an attractive alternative to driving and allow residents and tourists to safely visit the coast."

The 600m route will follow Marine Drive and Marshside Road to allow cyclists access to the reserve, with work poised to be carried out before November so as not to disturb nesting and migrating seasons.

Cllr Weavers told the publication that there are currently no footpaths connecting the RSPB spot with Southport, making this a valuable scheme.

The same newspaper recently reported that the fate of the proposed 'Cycle Town' status for Southport rests on whether residents and local businesses can accept plans for a major cycle path along Portland Street.
