When To Replace Your Wiper Blades

Typically, a set of wiper blades will last 12 months, unless they're damaged. If so - they need replacing immediately.

We can fit them for your while you wait, and save you 50% on dealer fitting prices. Or you could fit them yourself – read more about Replacing The Wipers Yourself.

As a quick guide – if you answer Yes to any of these questions then your wiper blades should be replaced:

  • Have you had the same blades for longer than a year? For maximum driving safety, we recommend that you change them yearly.
  • Do they make an unusual noise or juddering? This happens when the wiper is not making proper contact with the window, due to age or damage?
  • When you run your thumb down the blade do you find it worn or pitted?
  • Do your wipers clean your windscreen unevenly leaving streaky or unwiped areas that impair your vision? This is a good sign that your blades have deteriorated. Refer to Windscreen Patterns for more information.

Replacing The Wiper Blades Yourself

You should replace both wipers at the same time to help ensure clear driving vision from the entire windscreen. Don't forget to replace the rear blade if you have one at the same time.

It is important to clean the windscreen before installing new wipers. Car wash wax, tree sap and a host of other contaminants create a thin film layer on your windscreen. Use a non-abrasive cleaner and warm water to clean the windscreen.

See our How To change wiper blades Guide for step-by-step instructions.

Windscreen Patterns

If you get any of these sorts of patterns left on the windscreen, caused by the wiper blades, then you must replace them.

Vibration judder - jerky and sometimes noisy wiper arm movement - deformed wiper element, the wrong adaptor or aging and wear of the blade rubber and links.
