Winter Motoring: Fail To Prepare And Prepare To Fail
Advice For Driving In Winter
With weather in the UK being so unpredictable it can be easy to get caught in a snowstorm or severe rain during the winter months.
We advise that unless your journey is absolutely necessary, then keep off the road and stay at home.
However, if you must drive, make sure you are prepared for the conditions:
- Check the local and national weather forecasts before you set off.
- Listen to local and national radio and listen for travel updates or check your sat nav for travel information.
- Tell someone at your destination what time you expect to arrive.
- Make sure you have warm clothes, a blanket, food, boots, a torch and a spade in snowy conditions.
- Clear your windows and mirrors of ice before you set off using our ice–scrapers and de–icer.
- Consider the weather conditions that may affect you before you leave and make sure you are fully prepared.
Winter Weather Conditions
When driving during the winter months, you come up against many different driving conditions.
Follow our advice on how best to cope with:
- Sun - make sure your windscreen is clean and screen wash is topped up and also have a pair of sunglasses handy.
- Fog - in foggy conditions drive slowly and used dipped headlights.
- Ice - take it steady and avoid sharp breaking.
- Rain - slow down and double the distance between you and the car in front.
- Snow - drive conservatively and watch out for compacted snow.
