Depending on the type of car you own, heater matrix systems work in two ways. Generally speaking, older cars feature a water-cooled system which works by controlling the temperature based on the amount of water that is let through a hose when your heating system is turned on. The warm air that passes through the vents and into your vehicle is the result of the ventilation fan forcing air through the heater matrix. More modern vehicles use an air-blending system, which has a simpler approach to producing warm air when you turn the temperature control. With an air-blending system, the matrix remains at a consistent temperature, and warm air is a result of cool air from outside combining with hot air from the engine. Both systems are operated by the driver using a temperature control, and are centered around the heater matrix, which helps to produce hot air to keep you warm when driving in winter. As with all car components, there are signs that your heater matrix is blocked or faulty. If you notice a leak in the passenger-side footwell, there’s a good chance that your heater matrix is leaking coolant from beneath the carpet. The coolant that passes through your heater matrix has a distinct, sweet smell and is fairly easy to detect.
