Fitting Do's and Don'ts

Positioning

  • Do refer to vehicle specific carrier settings enclosed with fitting instructions
  • Always ensure that the cycle support arm is tilted slightly upwards
  • Do not modify or change vehicle specific settings

Top Straps

  • Bend top straps to follow bodywork profile as closely as possible
  • Ensure top straps are not load bearing onto composite spoilers or trim

Bottom Clamps

  • Ensure bottom clamps are clean and free from dust
  • Ensure bottom clamps are not load bearing onto composite spoilers or trim

Fitment tip

Most technical problems are caused by the bottom clamps appearing to be 2-3 inches too short to reach the bottom edge of the tailgate. To overcome this problem ensure that the angle adjusters are fully opened, exposing at least 45mm of the bolt between the carrier and the angle adjuster. This is outlined in step 2 of the fitting instructions.

Additional Information

To ensure full compliance with road traffic regulations the use of a lighting board/number plate is required if your vehicle's existing lights/number plate are obscured by this carrier. This is particularly important for vehicles with high mounted rear lights.

Rear Mount Carrier Bought this as I got tired of loading my dirty MTB in the back of the car. Easy to set up at first use & even easier every other time you use it. Stable and secure even when traveling at 70MPH. Rubber coated "claws" prevent scratches when attached to the rear of car. I personally use some extra bungie cord and foam between the bikes to secure them as the two straps attached in my opinion don't completely stop the bikes from moving around while being transported and thus causes the bikes to rub against each other. The only main downfall I find is that it doesn't fold completely flat, so does create a storage issue, unless you completely dismantle the rack. Overall a great product at a reasonable price. 02 December 2011

Excellent fit on a VW Touran I agonised over rear mounted bike carriers for a long time. I already use roof mounted carriers but needed to carry additional bikes and a tow bar solution was ruled out on the basis of price. Then it comes down to another choice; strap fitting or rigid fitting. Again price is a factor here, but having opted for a rigid carrier, I'm absolutely convinced that the additional £50 ish was money well spent. This carrier, once badged, the 'advanced' high mount carrier, is now part of the 'Exodus' range from Halfords. The carrier seems well made with good quality metals and plastics and rubberised protection in places where it touches the car....this protection seems a fairly recent addition judging by other reviews here and works very well to protect the car. Of course, the fitting of these carriers is completely dependant on the car to which its being fitted. In my case this is a 2008 VW Touran MPV which has an almost vertical rear end. As another reviewer has quite rightly pointed out, the fixing points for the VW Touran in the instructions are slightly wrong, with the upper hangers (kit 2) needing to be attached to point 2 and not point 1. However! I would say to put them into point 1 in the first place and then offer it up to the car - the hangers will then bend themselves into exactly the right place at which point move them to point 2 and you'll have it fitted perfectly. And I mean perfectly, once the lower clamps are done up tight, this thing does not move at all. You can open the boot up fully too, no problem at all. It simply doesn't move and appears to be perfect for this car with only one exception and that's the rear wiper, which isn't going to clear the carrier, so you'll need to make sure you don't use it. Pull the fuse is your best bet. Bikes are kept up and nicely out of the way of lights and number plate and with the use of a few additional bungies fit very well. Of course, this all depends what sorts of bikes you've got. About the other other downside is that the carrier can't be locked onto the car so you might want to add a long cable lock to it too. Hmmm the jury's out I bought this product because it had good reviews and looked like a pretty robusr piece of equipment (bars rather than straps). It was actually very easy to assemble (and believe me I can't put a nail in a wall straight so coming from me that is quite a compliment). Unfortunately it did not fit my BMW 5 series saloon (2012 model) by following the instructions so I took it to my local Halfords to get a professional to fit it. Unfortunately the guy in Halfords was even more inept than me and promptly broke it by over tightening it. Upshot - it does not fot all saloon cars and it broke very easily when tightening to fit (by a professional). I would buy it and have it fitted at a Halfords shop rather than on-line - just in case. 11 June 2012
Excellent sturdy carrier Good clear instructions (mut be followed) and easy to fit on my Mazda 6. Bit of adjustment needed to ensure neither of the two bikes blocked the lights. I'd recommend using some foam pipe insulation on the rack to keep the frame holders in the correct position once you've got it set for the bikes. Only downside is that it doesn't appear to take kids bikes (16" frame was too small to go on) so I guess they'll be in the boot! Also the fittings were loose in the box, as was one of the fitting kits, so I guess the rack may have been out before and brought back - but as it was still mint it didn't matter (although some bits could easily have gone missing - hence 4 start quality). 18 May 2012
Great product and very sturdy This is the first bike rack we have purchased, and it fitted perfectly on our Vauxhall Zafira. The quality seems high and is very firm and sturdy once fitted. It does take 15-20 minutes to assemble for the first time, and will require 2 people to fit it to your care prevent the body-work being scratched. If you follow the instructions (and the car specific fitting guide), then you should no problem with the assembly and installation. A very important points to note regarding assembly however; the instructions refer to loosening the levers to 4.5cm - DO NOT loosen these any further than this or the screws will detach from the frame and they will be very difficult to re-attach! Overall - very happy and would have no hesitation in recommending and with an extra £10.00 off for reserving on-line makes it even better. 17 April 2012
Halfords Advanced Rear High Mount 3 Cycle Carrier bought for a mk4 golf tdi (2003) fits perfectly, i would recommend that one uses bicycle inner tube to cover the hook ends that hold onto the hatch, saves scratching. 27 March 2012
Good carrier with some limitations This is a easy to assemble product that looks great and is well constructed. Sadly this product did not actually fit a Honda HRV but the very help staff took the time to find a rack that did. 12 November 2011

The Exodus Rear High Mount 3 Cycle Carrier Clamp Fitting is unsuitable for your Rover 75 Saloon. We advise the use of either a roofmount carrier (which requires roofbars) or if your vehicle has a towbar, then this type of carrier is also suitable but please check the nose-weight of your vehicle
