If you drive a larger vehicle such as a minivan, light truck, 4x4 - opens in a new tab or SUV you need to make sure it is kitted out with a set of tyres that can handle heavier loads to keep you and your passengers safe.

Extra load tyres or XL tyres are a special breed of tyres constructed to deal with the demands that larger vehicles place on them. XL tyres are heavier than standard car tyres, commonly being reinforced to handle heavier loads and increased tyre pressure. You can spot these tyres by looking to see if they are marked with labels such as Extra Load (XL), Reinforced (Reinf) or occasionally EXL, RFD or RF.

Buying XL tyres will benefit your vehicle by allowing you to travel longer distances than with normal non-reinforced tyres. XL tyres also have better resistance to mechanical damage and better stability.

XL Tyres FAQs

What does the XL mean on tyres?

XL means Extra Load. Basically, these tyres are made tougher to carry more weight than usual. So if you're loading up your car a lot or just want something a bit stronger, XL tyres have your back.

Are XL tyres better for potholes?

Yeah, they're usually better for potholes. Because they're built tougher to handle extra weight, they can take the hits from bumps and potholes a bit easier which means less chance of damage and a smoother ride.

Does my car need XL tyres?

It depends on your car and what you use it for. If your car manual says you need XL tyres, or you often carry heavy stuff, then it makes sense. Not sure? Just ask the team at Halfords they'll help you figure out what's right for you.

At Halfords we stock an extensive range of XL tyres to keep your vehicle safe and stable when carrying heavier loads.
