Wheel Balance

  • Ensures calm and undisturbed driving for every journey.
  • Achieved through the application of offsetting weights to specific points around the wheel.

  • Protects the longevity and condition of tyres, suspension, and fuel economy.
  • If you are purchasing new tyres from us, wheel balancing is included in the total cost.

The importance of balanced wheels

Balanced wheels allow for the efficient rotation of the axel at high speeds. This means that your journey can continue smoothly and free of disturbing vibrations. Long-term imbalanced wheels can cause serious damage to your vehicle, including both poor fuel conservation and braking distance, suspension issues, and hot and unevenly worn tyre treads.

What does the process involve?

Wheel balancing ensures that the combined weight of the wheel and tyre are evenly distributed around the axel. This is achieved through the application of tiny offsetting weights to specific points around the wheel. Without even weight distribution, pressure is applied disproportionally and wears down your tyres prematurely.

Generally, for four tyres the process will be completed in under an hour. Please note: if you are purchasing new tyres from us, wheel balancing is included in the total cost.

First signs and common causes of imbalance

The early signs of imbalanced wheels include a vibrating sensation via the wheels and/or steering wheel. Also, increasing difficulty to steer smoothly and a wobbling of the entire car at 40-50mph indicate imbalanced wheels. Whilst sometimes this problem may be unavoidable i.e. reaching high mileage, hitting kerbs and potholes can cause wheel imbalance as well.

We would recommend that you get your wheel balances checked at least every 6,000 miles, and no more than 15,000 miles, or after a flat or replacement tyre. This is because you can often have imbalanced wheels even without signs like vibrations.

Wheel Balancing vs. Wheel Alignment

Each of these processes are equally important, though they are used for different vehicle issues. Ultimately, wheel balancing is the process of evenly distributing weight across the tyre while wheel alignment ensures that the wheels are correctly angled to both the suspension and steering systems.

To summarise, wheel balancing allows for the smooth, rolling function of tyres while wheel alignment ensures that your vehicle can drive straight.
