The importance of balanced wheels

Balanced wheels help your car run smoothly at all speeds, giving you a calmer, more comfortable drive without unwanted vibrations. When wheels are out of balance, it can lead to uneven tyre wear, reduced fuel efficiency, and extra strain on your suspension and braking system. Over time, this can affect how your car handles and increase running costs. Keeping your wheels balanced helps protect your tyres, improve performance, and keep every journey feeling smooth and safe.

What happens during Wheel Balancing?

Wheel balancing makes sure the weight of your wheel and tyre is evenly spread, helping them spin smoothly as you drive. Small weights are added to precise points on the wheel to prevent vibrations and uneven pressure. Without proper balancing, tyres can wear out faster and your drive may feel less comfortable.

The process is usually quick and straightforward, with all four tyres typically balanced in under an hour. And if you’re buying new tyres from us, wheel balancing is already included in the price for added peace of mind.

First signs and common causes of wheel imbalance

The early signs of imbalanced wheels include a vibrating sensation via the wheels and/or steering wheel. Also, increasing difficulty to steer smoothly and a wobbling of the entire car at 40-50mph indicate imbalanced wheels. Whilst sometimes this problem may be unavoidable i.e. reaching high mileage, hitting kerbs and potholes can cause wheel imbalance as well.

We would recommend that you get your wheel balances checked at least every 6,000 miles, and no more than 15,000 miles, or after a flat or replacement tyre. This is because you can often have imbalanced wheels even without signs like vibrations.

Wheel Balancing vs. Wheel Alignment

Each of these processes are equally important, though they are used for different vehicle issues. Wheel balancing is the process of evenly distributing weight across the tyre while wheel alignment ensures that the wheels are correctly angled to both the suspension and steering systems.

Wheel balancing allows for the smooth, rolling function of tyres while wheel alignment ensures your vehicle can drive straight.
