What is Car Warranty?

A car warranty protects you against costs for both parts and labour after a mechanical or electrical failure in your vehicle. They can be supplied or sold by manufacturers and retailers alike, as well as third-party car warranty providers and insurance companies. Protection from car warranties in the UK often varies according to the terms of the agreement and depends on the car owner maintaining their vehicle to manufacturer specifications.

FAQS

You will not need to buy a warranty if your car is still covered by its manufacturer warranty. All new cars typically come with a warranty that usually lasts for the first 3 or more years of a vehicle’s life. During that time, the cost for repairing any faults (other than those associated with general maintenance) will be covered by the manufacturer.

As soon as the manufacturer warranty expires, you can purchase an extended warranty to protect yourself from having to foot the bill on future repair costs.

While cars have evolved to become more reliable, they have also become increasingly complex. Fault diagnosis can be a timely process and once identified, the repairs can prove time consuming and costly. Parts can be expensive and sometimes difficult to find, while labour costs can often exceed £200/hour.

Buying an extended warranty is a way to avoid these potential costs, providing the means to pay for any diagnosis, repairs and parts required to get a vehicle back on the road.

A car warranty is a great way to buy peace of mind, protecting you from unexpected and sometimes expensive repair costs if your vehicle develops a fault.

When you buy a car from new, it will likely come with a manufacturer warranty that typically lasts for the first 3-years of your vehicle’s life. If you buy a car second-hand, particularly if older than 3-years, the chances are this warranty may have expired. In such cases, buying a new warranty policy would provide ongoing protection against repair costs.

A car warranty is a great way to buy peace of mind, protecting you from unexpected and sometimes expensive repair costs if your vehicle develops a fault.

If you buy a car second-hand, particularly if older than 3-years, the chances are this warranty may have expired. In such cases, buying a new warranty policy would provide ongoing protection against repair costs.

A car warranty will not cover you for ‘service’, ‘frictional’, ‘disposable’ or ‘consumable’ parts, such as wheels, tyres, exhausts, batteries, wiper blades and any components replaced at your annual service.

A Halfords | MotorEasy warranty includes labour costs up to the value of your vehicle so you will not be met with any unexpected labour costs.

Some other car warranties will restrict you to a maximum labour rate that can sometimes exclude VAT. If the cost of work exceeds the labour rate in your policy, you may find yourself contributing a significant amount to fix your car.

Repairs are managed through our nationwide network of Halfords Autocentres. When you report a repair, our contact centre will give you the option to choose a convenient local Autocentre, for example, if you need one close to your home or place of work.

If your car is driveable, you can choose to deliver and collect your car yourself, or if preferred, we can arrange for it to be collected and returned to a place of your choosing. If your car is not driveable, we will arrange for a breakdown recovery vehicle to collect and return your vehicle at a time that suits.

Car warranties often carry an “excess” that you will need to pay, each time you make a claim. Contributing to a repair can help to reduce the price of your warranty policy.

The amount you pay can vary significantly from one provider to another and can ultimately determine whether the policy is worth having. For example, a cheap warranty policy that requires you to pay the first £250 of any claim, is unlikely to offer you much financial benefit.

A better approach is to look for a policy that provides good cover at an affordable price, with a low excess of £50 or less.

When you purchase A Halfords | Motoreasy warranty you are given the option of paying a zero excess, a £25 excess, or a £50 excess. By choosing either of the latter two options, you can reduce the price of your warranty policy.

A Halfords | MotorEasy warranty covers vehicles up to 12 years and 120,000 miles.

While you can find policies that cover up to 150,000 miles, it will usually come at a higher price or with a reduced list of items covered.

Once your car has been accepted for a warranty, the annual mileage restrictions are usually generous and are designed to suit the average motorist. That said, you should check your policy document to see whether there are any limits applied.

You should check the policy, as they are unlikely to be as comprehensive or full proof as a lower mileage policy. Similarly, you should also check the excess charge you are required to pay on any claims, as they tend to increase on a higher mileage car.

To keep your warranty valid, a provider will require you to service your vehicle according to the manufacturer’s schedule. If your car is older than 3-years, you will also need a valid MOT.

Some warranty providers or dealers may request you to service your vehicle at a listed garage rather than an independent provider. This can be a way for them to guarantee repeat business or steer you towards an expensive service plan.

In most cases, including with a Halfords | Motoreasy policy, the terms of your warranty policy will permit you to use an alternative service provider. However, you should always check the terms of your policy as being forced to use an expensive service provider will effectively push up the cost of your warranty protection.

A Halfords | MotorEasy warranty includes wear and tear cover as standard from day one, subject to your vehicle passing a vehicle Health Check at the start of your policy. You should beware of any other warranty providers that include clauses within their terms & conditions to exclude any claims that they deem to be caused by wear and tear. Given some 70% of claims can be attributable to wear and tear damage, such clauses give them the opportunity to avoid paying for repairs.

Unlike some warranties, a Halfords | Motoreasy policy will cover you for consequential damage, when a non-covered part causes damage to a covered part.

This is not the case with all warranty providers. For example, if your engines blows because a failed serviceable part (like an alternator belt) gets tangled with a cambelt, some providers will refuse to pay-out.

You should beware of any provider that includes clauses within their terms & conditions to exclude any claims resulting from consequential damage.

A good warranty will provide a claim limit up to the value of your car, as is the case with a Halfords | MotorEasy warranty

Some cheaper warranties have a claim limit, for example up to £500. Given this level will not cover the majority of repairs, the policy is unlikely to be of much value. Other providers may set an annual limit on the value or number of claims. Again, this is not the case with a Halfords | MotorEasy policy, which allows claims as high as the value of your car.

A Halfords | MotorEasy warranty gives you the option of choosing a plan for 12, 24 or 36 months. You can also decide to pay on a monthly rolling basis, or as an upfront annual fee.

Some car dealer warranties can be expensive, often costing more than the average repair bill they are designed to protect against. Other dealer warranties, particularly from independent non-franchised dealers, only offer basic cover for a limited period such as 3-months.

In many cases dealer warranties are unlikely to cover you for wear and tear and consequential loss, where a non-covered component causes damage to a covered part. As wear and tear can account for up to 70% of failures, you should think twice and check the terms and conditions before you buy.

We will pay directly for all valid claims, meaning you are never left out of pocket or asked to settle a bill when collecting or receiving your car from a Halfords Autocentre.

Car insurance is a legal requirement, whereas a warranty is optional. A car insurance policy is designed to pay-out from damage and injuries if your car is involved in an accident or is stolen. Insurance will not pay for repairs caused by a mechanical or electrical failure with.

A car warranty will not pay for damage caused by an accident, but it will cover the cost for repairs if and when your vehicle develops a mechanical or electrical fault.
