Car Seat Ages & Stages Guide

Finding the right size car seat might seem daunting at first, so take a look at our helpful buyers guide to choosing a car seat, with information on car seat group sizes from group 0+ to group 2-3, and simple advice on which type of seat your child needs.

Birth to 15 Months – Infant Car Seats

Group 0+ includes young babies weighing 0-13kg and measuring 40-85cm. As these car seats support the youngest of babies, they should always be rear-facing. Rear-facing car seats support your baby's spinal cord and work to minimise crash impacts.

9 Months to 4 Years – Toddler Car Seats

Group 1 car seats are designed for children weighing 9-18kg and those between the height of 76-105cm. Primarily for toddlers, we still recommend that you continue to invest in a rear-facing car seat for added protection. Your child is secured by a multi-point harness and either your vehicle’s seatbelt or an Isofix anchorage.

4 to 12 Years – Child Booster Seats

As the broadest category of car seats, group 2 and 3 are for children aged 4-12 (or until they reach 36 kg and 135cm). Generally, booster seats are light and convenient to use and enjoyed by children themselves. With side-impact protection, comfortable padding and appealing designs, both parent and child are happy to use Halfords booster seats.

Car seat FAQs

Until what age or size should I use a rear-facing baby seat?

We recommend that your child should be in a rear-facing baby seat, at least until they reach 15 months (or 13kg and 85cm). Ideally, you should keep your child in a rear-facing car seat for as long as you can, as it offers maximised protection by reducing the impact from a road accident. Younger babies have to be in a rear-facing car seat as they are unable to support their own heads, and front-facing seats strain their developing necks and spines.

What’s the difference between R44 and i‑Size (R129) standards?

Both R44 and R129 car seats are legal requirements to ensure that all European car seats fit a set standard. The R129 is a newer standard that was introduced in 2013 - it involves more comprehensive checks regarding head and neck protection. While both are appropriate standards, it’s possible that R129 may become the standard - something to think about for long-term cost efficiency decisions. R44 also measures based on weight while the i-Size sizing system revolves around height.

Is ISOFIX important?

Isofix uses multiple anchoring points that are built into your car for a safer connection between your vehicle and your child’s car seat. It rules out space for human error as many have visual and audio sensors that inform you when your child is secure. Since 2014, Isofix has been a legal requirement in cars in the UK. While seat belts are perfectly functional, Isofix systems are specially designed for the safety of infants and toddlers.

What is the free child seat consultation?

You can book a free 30-minute consultation to assess your needs like your child’s size and age, your vehicle, and your desired features. You will receive a tailored recommendation from our experts, who will then demonstrate how to easily install and remove the car seat from your vehicle. This quick and easy process ensures that convenience, safety and comfort are at the forefront of your car seat shopping experience.
