Halfords Cycle Carrier Lighting Board Wiring Kit is rated out of 5 by 8.Rated 1 out of 5 by takingthep from Incomplete No good. Packet broken and fixed with sellotape (an earlier return) and instructions missing.Date published: 2018-02-14Rated 3 out of 5 by pruslee from oh man... 6 hours. 6 FREEKIN' HOURS. I'm pretty sure they've had 2 different kits on sale. One i bought for my old polo 3 years ago was a dodle, took about an hour to connent. However i can't remember having to connect to 12v power, luckly my new mondeo has a 12v socket in the boot which I eventualy worked out I can hook up to. Even once I had the power and yhe little box came to life and started making clicking noise whe the indicators were on, the light board itself was still dead. With the help of dr google i found out that the socket itself has an earth pin. may be obvious for some but even if you alredy know this, there still nowhere on the little noise box where the earth wire could go. After a lot of head scratching, pulling off the trim and taking off the pannels which I already put back where they were before I've earthed (is that even a word?) the white cable from the socket itself directly to the negative (or positive? Whatever, the one without power) wire leading to the 12v socket in the boot and that finally did the trick. It worked in the end but it needs better writren instructions for me to recommend this kit, i may have as well done some research on the good old world wide web and bought all the bits separately for half the price.Date published: 2017-10-16Rated 4 out of 5 by RenoMan from Just the job! Being the enthusiastic DIY type I was willing to have a go at wiring in this kit and hopefully save myself a few quid in the process. The instructions I didn't think were up to much and could of been much better. I actually needed to read them through several times before I summoned the confidence to start splicing in the new wires. I will add that I found some good online videos on the subject that helped. As others have mentioned, the trick here is about correctly identifying the wires to the rear of each light cluster (I borrowed a multimeter which made things very easy) and then making good the connections using the scotch locks that are supplied. In all it took about 3 or 4 hours from start to finish, which included putting back interior trim panels etc. In all, I recommend this product but just be prepared to afford it some patience along with a few cups of coffee...Date published: 2017-03-08Rated 4 out of 5 by OxDIYer from Poor instructions but decent product With minimal effort Halfords could make installing this a good deal less intimidating by writing some decent instructions aimed at someone who isn't a professional car mechanic. It really isnt that difficult once you've figured out what to do and doesn't require any special tools. The key part of the operation is identifying which of the coloured wires correspond to which light. I used a spare 12v light bulb and a couple of pieces of wire cut from the long red wire supplied with the kit to work this out. You should be able to get to the lighting sockets by removing the rear lighting units. One wire goes in the black connector (on my car anyway), try the other wire in each of the other connectors until the test bulb lights. Obviously you need to have turned an indicator or something on.Date published: 2015-06-08Rated 4 out of 5 by John1985 from Don't be put off by the apparent complexity. So the garage/tow bar specialists were asking hundreds of pounds to do this - I've done a little DIY on my old campervan so thought I'd give it a try. Out of the packet the sheer number of different coloured wires was a bit daunting, but it was actually very simple to fit (if a little fiddly at times). My advice would be to access your rear light cluster with a multi meter and work out (+ write down) which wire does which light- then simply match up each wire from the relay to the correct wire. Took me about an hour once I knew which wire did what.Date published: 2015-04-08Rated 2 out of 5 by rushers82 from Useful product - but DO NOT try to fit it yourself Yes this is a complete product (although i did need some extra wiring due to the weird lighting wire setup on my Peugeot 207). However, to fit this yourself is an absolute NO unless you REALLY know what you're doing with in-car electronics and wiring. I called on a friend with good knowledge of such things and it took him three hours to work it out and wire it all together.Date published: 2014-08-07Rated 2 out of 5 by Webbymp23 from Difficult installation It suggests in the item reviews that " it should be reasonably straight forward to install. Some knowledge is required for a successful completion of this task." This should be replaced with "do not touch this installation unless you are absolutely sure about the wiring of your car and have GOOD knowledge of wiring components". I spent 4 hours trying this today and was not successful. The unit was dead and I had no idea why. I rang a tow bar installer for instructions as the ones provided are abysmal with no pictures to assist and still I was not much further. I will now rely on a vehicle electrician to finish the job.Date published: 2014-02-11Rated 5 out of 5 by Avonside from just the job Have just fitted this kit to my 55 plate BMW X5. it works a dream and was a very easy install.took me about 3 hours in total and the longest part was double checking that I had the correct signal wires to the relay. Great product and a relatively cheap way to get a fully functioning 7 pin trailer plug for lighting boards.Date published: 2013-05-20
