Rated 2 out of 5 by from First month absolute bliss... then the gears... The gears are a problem- they slip like mad. I went from being in love with the bike & riding everywhere for a month to not being able to ride it anywhere further than the local shops. I brought it into store so many times you wouldn't believe- they said after first 6-9 weeks the gears would need readjusting, so I was reassured. You can imagine my disbelief when not even 5 mins into my journey home from picking my bike up and *slip*, gave it the benefit of being a fresh adjustment but after 10mins I had to turn and go back. And it was like this for 8/9 months. I'd constantly bring it in, leave it in (sometimes for a few days), pick it up with high hopes and *slip* Eventually the store said it was a recognised fault with this model and I was offered a full refund which I put towards a pashley with no regrets. Other issues - noisy chain guard rattling over the slightest of bumps and the recommended basket looks quite cheap (it's plastic) in quality and considering the price I expected more. I regretted buying it. Climbing hills is hard even when fully functioning! And I now use a heavier bike on the same journey with no problem so it has to be the gear range. Couple this with when it's slipping out of gear and it is a recipe for disaster! First month was bliss. Down hill from after. Maybe the newer models are different, who knows, but this was my experience from 1.5 years ago

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Safe and solid I bought this bike as a shopping bike and for making short trips across London. It is perfect for this. The step through frame makes it safe and easy to manage in traffic when you have to keep stopping, and the 'sit up and beg' riding position gives excellent visibility. The fully enclosing chain guard allows you to ride in ordinary clothes and without cycle clips. The basket is an absolute must and good value at half price. The bike comes with a decent rear rack so I added a bag to sit on this and I also added the kickstand. The tyres looked solid enough but I paid extra to have Schwalbe Marathon Plus fitted as I have had them on all my bikes and never had a single puncture in many thousands of miles. This is quite a heavy bike and adding the basket, bag, kickstand and, particularly, the Marathon Plus 38c tyres didn't make it any lighter so I tend to avoid journeys which involve carrying the bike up steps at railway stations. The brakes are strong and sure, stopping you with no problem. Some reviewers have had issues with the gears but these Sturmey Archer gears just take some getting used to, particularly if you have been used to derailleur gears. I find the range ideal for the purpose of London shopping. So much depends on how the bike is set up in the shop, and I must say that Cycle Republic in Battersea did an excellent job of sorting out the few inevitable initial problems. I also note that some reviewers complain about the noise from the mudguards. Mine are rock solid but I did notice noise but coming from the chain banging on the enclosing guard. This happens when the back wheel slips forward allowing the slack chain to catch on the guard, which produces a fearsome racket. But this is easily fixed by repositioning the wheel by a fraction, or getting the store to do it for you. All in all this is a very solid bike and ideal for its purpose. If you can get it like I did for the reduced price of (I think) £220 then it is a bargain

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comfortable, relaxing and very sturdy ride I really, really like this bike. I've come to the Ashwell from a fairly standard hybrid and the difference in comfort is incredible. I am using the Ashwell for my commute to work (about 1hr across London, all flat) and so far it is perfect. The saddle is extremely comfortable and I find the upright riding position suits me better (base of back and saddle pressure points no longer an issue) than tipping forward more. As well as the bike being beautiful (in my opinion!) it does everything I need it to and the range of gears is more than adequate for me - I think I use two gears on an average ride to work. The bike is probably not for everyone: it is fairly heavy and is not built for speed. I kind of like these aspects of the bike though as I feel safer and more relaxed riding this bike on my journey to work. In summary, it is perfect for me and what I need it for although it's probably not for you if you're looking for something light and nippy. NB I just wanted to comment that I haven't had the issues with this bike that some of the other reviews have mentioned...

Rated 2 out of 5 by from This cannot climb even the lowest hill This bike ticks all the boxes on looks, it is exactly what I wanted. I wanted a bike that looked like a ladies bike with a basket to enhance that look. The seat and handlbars are fantastic, they are so comfortable it is second to none. The riding position is perfect for me with slight lumber spine issues after riding the more popular mountin bikes. For performance this is not good at all so please be aware of this as you are not told this in the sales pitch at all. Where do I start: 1. The bike does not climb even the simplest of hills on your every day cycle path, it is extremely embarrasing to have to get off your bike and push it to say the least. It only has 5 gears that I was assured by the sales team was a good thing, well it is not as it takes great skill to even change the gear and get it to recognise you have right away. It changes up and down the gears itself it is very slow of the mark and it cannot maintain a steady pace unless you are on a complete level road or cycle path. Even the slightes dip knocks this gorgeous looking bike out of sync. 2. OMW you can feel every single little nook and cranny bump and lets face it the british roads are not sleek and smooth but they are not normally this bad or appear not to be when riding other bikes across them. You seem to be riding along going uw ow argh and trying to avoid even minor surface marks and not concentrate on your actual safety. This is down to not lack of suspension but none at all and again the sales pitch said this was not a problem. 3. Nothing compared to the serious negativity of the main complaints the gears and the no suspension but needs mentioning also, the mudguards "again if not on spirit level straight surface" they bang about making it noisy and for people to look around not to see the nice looking bike you are riding but to see where the banging and clacking is coming from. I was sold this bike as a great bike by the sales team at Halfords and yes to look at and for seat comfort it is but that is where it stops. Please only consider this bike if your maximum distance for a ride is a mile or 2, and consists of no hills (I do not mean road signed gradient hills) I mean even very small up and down dios on a standard cycle path, and the surface is a.smooth as a babies bum as they say. Just to mention also on collecting my bike I purchased the pendleton basket for £40 and I asked if the guy could put it on for me whilst he had his tools there adjusting my seat and handlebars, he said no I do not know how to do it it is very tricky and no one else in shop does either, he did say he could try but it would take over an hour to do so as it is so tricky (not a good sales pitch for the pendleton dark wicker basket). We said it is ok we will try ourselves when we get it home, my son fit it within 7mins. Gorgeous bike to look at and try around the shop with flat floor and no need for gear change, but take it outside the shop and the performance is extremely poor. I think Victoria needs to rethink putting her name to these as she will end up with not a very good respectable one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smiling for two years on my Pendleton Ashwell I've had my blue 19" Pendleton Ashwell, fitted with the Pendleton bike basket, for two years now and it was my first bike as a grown woman (mid thirties) having not ridden one since I was a small child. I looked at other styles of classic "sit up and beg" bikes and this was the best value with an excellent quality for the price. I bought it for my short commute to and from work, and, yes, there is quite a hill on my way in, and for popping to the shops to pick up groceries. When I bought the bike I looked at other reviews here and I was very grateful for the recommendation for the Pletscher Comp zoom kickstand. My local bike workshop very kindly fitted it for me and found the right bolts for my bike (as the ones supplied with the stand don't work with the holes on the bike). When I bought the bike the gears were not set up correctly by the lads in the Halfords shop. Fourth didn't exist, fifth was really hard and there was not difference between 1-3. Fortunately I took my bike to my local bike workshop and the engineer there sorted out the hub gears and re-set them to the manufacturer's specs. and they now work like a dream. I've also since changed the bell for a better quality one as it started to ring over every bump in the road. I absolutely love this bike - you feel fantastic riding it as it's so comfortable and you can carry a lots of luggage and shopping in the basket and some pannier bags. Of course, with this style of bike, I'm never very fast and it is a bit of a workout going up the hill on may way to work or town, but I do get there in some style and have bought lots of lovely accessories to compliment the classic style.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Looks good but... I bought this bike 18 months ago and have had quite a few problems with it. It looks good but.... The first one was missing several bolts and screws, meaning the mudguard and chain cover fell off on the ride home. Halfords replaced it saying the bike should last many years. I had the gear cable tweaked and a few other minor fixes. But now the rear mud guard has split in two just out of warranty. An inexpensive but annoying fault that shouldn't happen so soon, in my view. I love this bike and it looks good... when it is working.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Lovely bike if working. I bought this bike a year ago. First few months it worked like a dream and I really like the look of it. After that it started playing up when starting to change a gear. Then a tyre broke. Took it to Halfords for repair, and after that it was just one thing after another. Gear system is so complicated and getting a wheel of is not that simply. I would not recommend the product if you planning on using the bike a lot.
