Choosing the right bike for your child starts with finding one that matches the following:

  • Age

  • Size - height and weight

  • Riding ability

At Halfords, you'll find a wide range of kids' bikes for every stage of learning, from first rides to more confident cycling.

For children who are just getting started, a balance bike - opens in a new tab helps them learn balance and steering before introducing pedals and brakes. Building these skills first can make learning to ride easier and help children gain confidence on two wheels.

Once they're ready to pedal, our bikes for ages 3+ include stabilisers to provide extra support while they learn. As their confidence grows, the stabilisers can be removed, helping them progress to independent riding and prepare for a larger bike in the future.

Our range includes bikes from trusted brands such as:

  • Apollo

  • Raleigh

  • Kiddimoto

  • Disney

Many models include child-friendly features designed to improve comfort, durability and safety, including fully enclosed chainguards on selected bikes.

Girls bikes and boys bikes

Our girls' bikes and boys' bikes share the same quality builds and safety features, with colours, graphics and finishing touches chosen to suit your child.

Frames and standover heights match each wheel size, so the most important thing is choosing the correct size for your child rather than the styling alone.

Kids bikes with stabilisers

Many 12", 14" and 16" kids' bikes come with stabilisers, or can be fitted with them, to help new riders build confidence as they learn. Stabilisers provide extra support while children develop their pedalling, steering and braking skills.

If your child is already comfortable balancing on two wheels, for example after using a balance bike, they may be ready to start riding without stabilisers. This can help them transition more quickly to independent cycling and build confidence on a pedal bike.

Kids Bikes FAQs

How to measure kids bike size?

The best way to size a kid’s bike is by height and inseam, not just age. 12-inch bikes suit toddlers (2-4 years), while 14–16-inch bikes fit 4-6-year-olds.

A 20-inch bike works for ages 7-9, and 24-inch bikes are ideal for 8-12-year-olds. For the perfect fit, check out our kids' bike size guide - opens in a new tab

What age do kids learn how to ride a bike?

Most kids learn to ride between 3 and 7 years old. Many start with a balance bike or stabilisers before moving to pedals around 5-6 years old. Every child is different, so patience and practice are key.

What age is a 20-inch bike for?

A 20-inch kids' bike is typically suitable for children aged 7 to 9 years old or between 115cm and 135cm tall. Many 20-inch bikes introduce features such as gears and hand brakes, helping children develop their riding skills and take on longer journeys with greater control.

If your child is close to the upper end of this height range, it may be worth considering a 24-inch bike to allow room for growth and ensure a comfortable fit.

Not sure which size is right? Our kids' bike size guide - opens in a new tab can help you choose the right bike based on your child's height, age and riding ability.

What size bike does my child need?

Kids' bikes are sized by wheel size, making it easier to choose a bike that's appropriate for your child's age and height. As a general guide:

  • 12-inch bikes: suitable for children aged 2 to 4 years

  • 14-inch bikes: suitable for children aged 3 to 5 years

  • 16-inch bikes: suitable for children aged 4 to 6 years

  • 18-inch bikes: suitable for children aged 5 to 7 years

  • 20-inch bikes: suitable for children aged 6 to 9 years

  • 24-inch bikes: suitable for children aged 8 to 11 years

While age is a useful starting point, height is often the best way to find the right fit. Always check the recommended height range on the product page and make sure your child can sit comfortably with both feet flat on the ground when stopped.

What size bike is best for a 5-year-old?

5-year-olds typically ride a 16-inch bike, though taller children may be ready for an 18-inch. Check your child's height against the size guide rather than choosing on age alone.

What size bike is best for an 8-year-old?

8-year-olds typically ride a 20-inch bike, with taller or more confident riders moving onto a 24-inch. Height and inside leg are typically a better guide than age.

What is the difference between a kids bike and a junior?

Kids' bikes generally cover wheel sizes up to 24 inches for children up to 11 years old.

Junior bikes bridge the gap between adult bikes for taller children and are typically suitable once they measure taller than 117 cm
