Halfords Gearbox Oil
Gearbox oil keeps the complex cogs and machinery inside gearboxes performing perfectly. Depending on your car or van, you may only need to change the gearbox oil every 30,000 - 60,000 miles. Regularly replacing it ensures a smoother ride and extends your gearbox’s lifespan. It’s an affordable and essential maintenance task, made easy with Halfords.
We offer a wide selection of gearbox oils from top brands, including high-quality Wynn’s oil and Comma oil, alongside our trusted Halfords-branded gearbox lubricants. Use our gearbox oil selector tool to find the right oil for your vehicle. Changing gearbox oil is part of routine maintenance, but if you notice a leak or swap your gearbox, replacing the fluid (and fixing the leak) is crucial.
While changing gearbox oil can be a little more complex than an engine oil and filter change, it’s a task that a confident home mechanic can manage with the right tools and preparation. At Halfords, you’ll find a comprehensive range of engine oils and fluids from leading brands, all at competitive prices. Home delivery is available as well as our convenient Click & Collect service from your local store.
How to check transmission fluid
To check your transmission fluid, start your car and let it warm up. Locate the transmission dipstick (usually near the engine) and pull it out. Wipe it clean, reinsert it fully, then remove it again to check the fluid level and condition. Healthy transmission fluid should be red or pink and within the marked range. If it’s dark or has a burnt smell, it may need replacing.
How much 2-stroke oil to 1 litre of petrol
The correct 2-stroke oil-to-petrol ratio depends on your engine type, but a common mix is 50:1 (20ml of 2-stroke oil per litre of petrol). Some older or high-performance engines may require a 40:1 or 25:1 ratio. Always check your manufacturer’s recommendations for the precise mix.
How to check gearbox oil level
To check your gearbox oil level, ensure your vehicle is parked on a level surface. Locate the gearbox oil fill plug (usually on the side of the transmission). Remove the plug and check the oil level - it should be just below the opening. If the level is low, top up with the recommended gearbox oil to ensure smooth operation.
