Halfords Weld Through Primer 500ml
The Halfords Weld-Through Primer (500ml) is a highly conductive, zinc-rich primer, designed to give you extra protection during welding processes. The primer adds an anti-corrosive coating to protect your surface, and once fully hardened, it’s temperature-resistant up to a huge 110°C.
It’s compatible with all Halfords gloss and metallic paints and lacquers, and can be applied to a large variety of surfaces. Use it on steel, aluminium, fibreglass, body fillers and existing paint and bodywork, as well as on most well-prepared wood, stone, and plastic surfaces (when used with a plastic adhesion promoting primer first).
Preparing for Primer
Before starting the repair, clean the panel with a lint free cloth and a suitable surface cleaner or degreaser.
Ensure that the bare surface is solid and rust free. Repair any damage by suitable means, and use a suitable abrasive paper, wire wheels etc.
Once the area is fully prepared, clean the panel again with a lint free cloth and a suitable surface cleaner or degreaser. Then take a tack cloth and remove any dust or contaminants on the panel. Use a quality masking tape and masking paper to fully mask off the vehicle, leaving the area to be primed exposed.
Note: This primer is designed to bond to untreated steel. Painting over existing primer or paint may cause adhesion issues and weak welds.
Priming
At this stage, only apply primer to areas that will not be accessible once welded.
Shake the primer for 2 minutes, until you hear the agitator ball inside, then apply a first thin “dust” coat to give best possible adhesion.
Holding the can around 25-30cm from the panel, press the nozzle and move the can in a smooth side-to-side motion.
Don’t over-apply the primer as this can affect the quality of the weld. You should only need 1-2 coats until the area is suitably covered. Allow time in-between coats.
Once fully dry, you can begin welding the panel. Once welding is complete, allow the surface to cool, then clean it again. Apply weld-through primer to all accessible bare metal areas for added corrosion protection.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE:
- Store can at room temperature before use
- The icons on the side of the can give you quick instructions on things like working temperature and drying times
- Ensure you read the complete instructions and familiarise yourself with each step, and make sure you have all consumables you need to hand before you start to paint.
- For detailed instructions see back of can
- Avoid spraying in direct sunshine, cold, damp, humid or windy weather
- Optimum ambient temperature is between +10 - +25
- Once you’re done, spray the can upside down for 5 seconds to clean the nozzle
*The drying time can change depending on the ambient temperature, humidity and the thickness of the coats applied. Ensure the paint is fully dry before moving onto the next stage.
Take care when preparing older paint surfaces (pre-1970) as these may contain harmful lead.
Make sure you have enough ventilation in the area you’re painting in to prevent a harmful build-up of solvent gasses.
