What size chips can be fixed?

If the chip in your windscreen is located within the line of vision, then we can repair chips up to 10mm in size. Any larger and the windscreen will need to be replaced. If the chip is outside of the line of vision, but anywhere within the area covered by the windscreen wipers, it can usually be fixed, but it depends on the width and depth of the chip. If your windscreen has multiple chips in it, then it may be more difficult to fix.

Can a windscreen chip fail an MOT?

Yes. A chipped windscreen is a common cause of MOT failure. The maximum damage size is 10mm in the driver’s line of vision (imagine the area of windscreen directly above the windscreen), and 40mm anywhere else in the windscreen area. If you’re booking your car in for an MOT, always check the condition of your windscreen before taking it to the test centre, and repair any windscreen chips. A handy tip is to use a 5p coin as a reference as this is slightly larger than 10mm. While we can repair most windscreen chips, in some cases if the chip is too large or too deep, then a replacement windscreen may be required. If you require a full replacement of your windscreen we advise you speak to your insurance company as this may be covered in your policy.
