Boardman CX Team Bike - 50, 53, 55.5, 57.5cm Frames is rated out of 5 by 64.Rated 5 out of 5 by Kevthehat from Does it all It might be true that a pure road bike will move a little faster on the tarmac and a pure mountain bike might go a little better through thick mud, however not by a great deal. As a commuter this is perfect, rolls well on the road and you can shortcut along bridleways to avoid the traffic at every opportunity. Besides, with all the potholes and raised drains etc. you don't want to be barreling over those on skinny slick tyres! Off the road, this is great fun, light, maneuverable and fast. I absolutely love the SRAM 1x system, 44t on the front and 10-42t on the back pretty much covers the same range as the 24 speed road bike this is replacing. Obviously the jumps between the gears are larger but only a couple of times in the last month would I have felt a bit more comfortable with a gear inbetween. I chose this over the newer model (CXR) as this offers the next level up in brakes and gears, Rival vs Apex and also the 10t sprocket at the back, vs 11t on the CXR. That said, I think the 11t sprocket would have still been enough for most applications. Adjustment on the brakes can be a little fiddly and you need to take care of the brake discs so they go out of true, although it is possible to tweak them back, I've done it. Overall, couldn't be happier, in the woods, on the road, commuting and family rides (with child seat on the back), this is perfect. Have owned many bikes from many of the top manufacturers including Cannondale, specialized, cube & Ribble etc. Bought this for a bit of fun. That saying it's the best bike I've bought so far. Frame is stiff and super comfy. 5"11 and a 53 fits perfect. Bike will handle anything you throw at it. Components are superb for the price. Hydrolic brakes are on point as expected. Can't fault it at all. So much fun on the trails/woodlands. Wheels soak up all imperfections in the road. Not really lost anything in average speed on the road while using the knobbled tires provided. Can't stress how comfortable this bike is!!! Stick some slicks on and Bobs your uncle, you've a great road bike!!! Well done Mr Boardman, you've nailed it.Date published: 2018-05-06Rated 5 out of 5 by Nearholmer from Excellent bike; shame about the build Very good bike for my needs, which are commuting on poorly-surfaced cycle paths and half-day rides that are about 50/50 roads and tracks. It converts effort into forward motion better than any bike I’ve had, and gives me none of the shoulder discomfort I’ve had on other bikes. The range of ratios suits my needs, and shift is slick once you get used to it. Brakes are super. Used it a great deal last summer/autumn, and about three days a week for commuting, except in the rainiest and coldest period. The bad bit was that a build error, the omission of a simple spacer washer, led to one pedal coming adrift in service. By the grace of god, it fell off as I was slowing right down to take a look at a picturesque building. Half an hour before, I’d been riding on a busy A road, and if it had happened there, I probably would be here to write this. Ditto if it had happened in any number of other circumstances. Halfords were deeply embarrassed, and I actually ended up with a complete replacement bike, because they couldn’t source replacement parts (badly mashed threads on pedal and crank).Date published: 2018-05-04Rated 3 out of 5 by rebell53 from Commuter Single front and 11 at back is really awkward to adjust with only one cable adjuster screw on derailleur. Bottom bracket always creaking despite a strip down from shop and regreased. It is very poor that this is still an issue after so many years of complaints. One ride so far, the gearing is fine for the South Downs, brakes have good modulation. Swapped the seat post for a Boardman carbon elite post, and will swap the bars for wider 44cm ones.Good base bike which you can upgrade to suit your riding.Date published: 2018-03-03Rated 4 out of 5 by Paulson from CX Team The bike represents great value for money especially as it includes the Rival hydraulic 1x groupset. The wheels are quite heavy but extremely strong - I previously used these on a Hybrid Pro and they ran completely true over more than 7500 miles on mixed terrain with no service adjustments. The shifting is very precise but people moving from 2x10 or 2x11 will notice large jumps in ratios. I must admit the ratios do not always work for me but generally they are fine. The climbing gear 42-44 (1.05) is similar to a 32-34 (1.06) on a compact setup so it will be fine for most people up almost all gradients. The top gear 10-44 (4.4) is also similar to the 11-50 (4.6) on a standard compact setup so no problems with spinning out on the flat either. The brakes are excellent and have been rub free so far. The overall finish is good. The bike is not light at around 10Kg and it does not feel especially sporty. It makes a really good commuter with mudguard and racks fitted. The only issue I have with the bike is the bottom bracket and I urge people to check for play (or dragging) before taking away from the shop. Mine was fitted without the correct spacers so there was significant side to side play, fortunately I am a relatively competent home mechanic and have experience with setting the PF30 up properly. The CX Team is fantastic value for money.Date published: 2018-02-16Rated 5 out of 5 by HGPhil from Great all rounder I wanted a bike which could survive the UK (lack of) road maintenance, not worry about just being on tarmac and still be fun to ride and climb easily. The CX team is great for this, spec on the kit is very good except for the tyres (as others have mentioned). As I'm 90% on tarmac I've swapped the tyres for semi-slicks. This gives the more road bike like feel I missed (from my ancient road bike) and much more confidence on cornering. The Sram 11 speed is really good, no more messing with front changers, the range is great for a single cassette. After a bit of further adjustment of brake grips (Halfords didn't even ask my hand size on setting up the bike) the disk brakes work fantastic from either full drop down position, or when riding hands on hoods.
