What Is the Law on Child Car Seats?

In the UK, it is a legal requirement that children must use a car seat or booster seat until they’re 12 years old or 135cm in height - whichever comes first. As a result, it’s essential to find a seat that provides both security and comfort to your little one.

How to Choose the Right Size Car Seat

Choosing the right size child car seat is all dependent on which sizing system you refer to. The R44 sizing system is based on weight and categorises child car seats into groups, while the newer R129/i-size car seats are based on a child’s height. When should I upgrade to a bigger seat?

Babies and young children are advised to remain in a rear-facing baby car seat until at least 15 months, or until they reach 85cm in height. This is to protect their delicate necks and spines, to prevent potential asphyxia and to minimise the impact from a road accident. Toddlers should remain in their toddler car seat until they are 4 years old, or 105 cm tall. Experts recommend that this age should still face backwards to maximise safety. Your child should remain in their child car seat until the age of 12, this is a legal requirement in the UK.
