After trying the main DIY outlets without success I went to Halfords as a last chance to buy a heavy duty interchangeable screwdriver. The 300mm rigid shaft was ideal and the hex bit head offered the versatility I wanted. The price was a bit higher than I had planned but I was given £5 off and the assurance of a lifetime guarantee so that won me over. And did the tool do the job, oh yes it did, no trouble at all! For my next tool purchase I'll try Halfords 1st!

Good but not great
There are plenty of good things about this ratchet driver and a few not so good things.
The good - this Halfords Advanced product is branded Geardriver and is in fact identical to the Gearwrench and SATA ratchet screwdrivers, as they are all produced by Apex Tool Group, and the Halfords version is the cheapest one available to UK buyers. It's a high-quality tool designed for heavy professional use, and bears comparison to similar ratchet drivers available from tool truck brands such as Snap-On and Mac Tools. The 1/4" female square drive handle will accept 1/4" male square drive shafts and adaptors from any of these other brands, offering a lot of flexibility. One very useful inclusion in this set is a 1/4" square female to female adaptor, which enables shafts to be joined together to make extra-long shafts, and there is a 1/4" square male drive shaft as well as two shafts with 1/4" hex female ends, so the driver handle can be used with both standard 1/4" screwdriver bits and 1/4" sockets. It would have been useful to include a 1/4" square female to 1/4" hex female adaptor with this set, but I have a few of those anyway, so that's not a big problem.
The problems I've noticed are mostly to do with the driver handle and its ratchet direction selector switch. For one thing, there are a lot of sharp edges around the switch, which make it uncomfortable to use. I found it necessary to smooth off these sharp edges with a needle file, and it feels much better now, but I really don't expect to have to file down sharp edges on a brand-new tool. The switch clicks between direction positions aren't very strong or positive - other ratchet drivers I own have much stronger clicks. But the worst thing in my opinion is that the ratchet directions are marked the wrong way round - in other words, when you move the switch to the left-hand position, with the arrow pointing left, the ratchet actually turns clockwise, i.e. to the right, in the opposite direction to the arrow! This is quite annoying - I have ratchet screwdrivers from many other brands including Sealey, Wera, Trident, Teng, Neilsen and Britool, all of which work in the direction you'd expect from the arrow markings, so this Geardriver is really an annoying exception to the rule, and that's going to bug me every time I use it.
The Velcro pouch which is supplied is rubbish, I chucked it out straight away. The plastic tray is reasonably sturdy, and could be used for storage in a tool chest drawer, but I'd have preferred a blow-moulded case or a foam insert to keep the kit together. There is a useful selection of screwdriver bits included, but the box for those has a silly belt clip on it which I also got rid of straight away - does anyone really carry these bit sets around on their belt?
Overall, this is a good value kit for the professional user (especially good value with the trade discount, of course), but there are a few rough edges (literally).
