Halfords Brake Fluid and Clutch Fluid
Brake fluid and clutch fluid are crucial to your car, van, and some motorcycles. Brake fluid should be changed every two years, and while it’s not a simple job, it can be done at home with the right products and tools, all of which you can get at Halfords.
You’ll see a lot of ‘dots’ around brake fluid. These refer to the fluid’s rating, with higher ratings indicating better performance. Most cars use Dot 4 fluid for their brakes and clutches.
Your brake fluid transfers force from your foot when you hit the brake into pressure, which is then applied by the callipers to create braking force. Without the right amount and quality of fluid, your brakes won’t work effectively. The same fluid is also used to operate the clutch, which is why brake fluid and clutch fluid are interchangeable.
As well as brake fluids from leading brands like Comma, Mobil, and Wynns, our Vizibleed aid makes draining old fluid safer and easier. Before replacing the fluid, use a Halfords brake cleaner to flush out the system, ensuring peak performance from your new fluid.
At Halfords, we don’t just stock high-quality brake fluids, we also offer Motorcycle Batteries to keep your bike in top condition. You can shop our entire range of brake and clutch fluids online, as part of our engine oils and fluids selection. Everything is available to buy online, with free home delivery available. If it’s easier, have your brake fluid, Motorcycle Batteries, and car maintenance essentials dropped off at your local Halfords store with our Click and Collect service. You’ll be safe and sound on the streets again in no time.
How to check brake fluid
To check your brake fluid, locate the reservoir under the hood, usually near the back of the engine bay. The reservoir has minimum and maximum markers. If the fluid is below the minimum, it’s time to top it up. Use only the recommended brake fluid type for your vehicle. Dark or dirty fluid may indicate contamination and should be replaced.
How to change brake fluid
Changing brake fluid involves draining the old fluid, flushing the system, and refilling with new fluid. Start by removing old fluid from the reservoir, then bleed each brake line until clean fluid runs through. Use a brake bleeder kit like the Halfords Vizibleed for a safer, easier process. Always check your vehicle’s manual for specific requirements.
Is brake fluid the same as clutch fluid?
Yes, in most vehicles, brake fluid and clutch fluid are the same. They are both hydraulic fluids that help transfer force efficiently. However, always check your vehicle’s manual for compatibility and recommended fluid type.
