Locking Wheel Nut Key:

Where to Find It and Why You Need It for a Service or MOT

If your vehicle has alloy wheels, it will usually be fitted with locking wheel nuts (also called locking wheel bolts). These anti-theft nuts require a unique locking wheel nut key to remove the wheels safely.

When you book a car service or MOT, it’s important to bring your locking wheel nut key with you. Our technicians need it to remove your wheels and complete essential safety checks.

Do I need my locking wheel nut key for a service or MOT?

Yes, in most cases, we cannot complete a full service or MOT inspection without it.

During your appointment, we remove the wheels to check:

  • Brakes and brake wear
  • Steering components
  • Suspension systems
  • Tyres and wheel condition

If the locking wheel nut key isn’t available, this may delay your service or prevent some checks from being carried out.

Where is my locking wheel nut key?

Locking wheel nut keys are usually stored somewhere inside the vehicle. They’re often supplied in a small plastic box or pouch when the car is new or left by the previous owner.

Common places to check:

  • The glove box
  • Under the carpet or boot liner
  • Spare wheel well
  • Boot side compartments
  • Vehicle tool kit
  • Centre console or armrest
  • Under driver or passenger seats

Tip: The key often looks like a small metal socket adaptor with a patterned end.

What happens if I’ve lost my locking wheel nut key?

If you’ve lost your locking wheel nut key, let your garage know before your appointment.

Wheels can usually still be removed using specialist locking wheel nut removal tools, but:

  • It can take extra time
  • A new appointment may be needed
  • An additional removal charge may apply (potentially up to £70)

In some cases, we may also be able to help identify your locking nut type and source a replacement key.

To avoid delays or extra charges, please check your vehicle for the locking wheel nut key before coming in for your service or MOT, and bring it with you on the day.
