Do XL tyres need higher pressure?

XL tyres carry additional heavy load on vehicles, such as additional passengers and baggage. They’re usually fitted to large vehicles, including SUVs, people carriers, and 4X4s. Because of the additional weight, XL tyres are much larger in size than traditional tyres, and they’re also designed with a more robust build.

The build of XL tyres means that they usually have additional pressure to carry the extra weight, so that they can continue to power the vehicle safely and at speed. To find your tyre pressure, check the car manual or look on your dashboard.

It’s important not to overinflate an XL tyre, as it could cause damage. Some of the effects of overinflated tyre pressure include excessive wear and tear, poor vehicle handling, and burst tyres. Although it may be tempting to put as much air in your XL tyres as possible, we strongly advise you stick to the manufacturer’s advisable pressure levels. For further advice, read our guidance on how to inflate your tyres.
