Brake Pad Wear Sensors FAQs

How to check brake pad wear?

The easiest way is to look through the wheel spokes where you should see the pad pressed against the brake disc. If the friction material looks thin (around 3mm or less), it’s time to replace them. Some cars also trigger the wear sensor light on the dashboard. If you’re unsure, pop into Halfords and we’ll check them for you.

How to remove a brake pad wear sensor?

Wear sensors clip into the pad and connect to the car’s wiring. To remove one, carefully unclip it from the pad and disconnect the plug from the loom. They can be a bit fiddly, so many people prefer to have them swapped at Halfords while changing the pads.

Do all brake pads have wear indicators?

No, not all of them. Some pads rely on built-in metal tabs that squeal when they’re worn, while others use electronic wear sensors. It depends on the make as well as model of your car. At Halfords, we can help you check which type your car uses.

Can you reuse brake pad sensors?

In most cases, no. Once a wear sensor has been triggered, it’s designed to be replaced with the new pads. Reusing one could mean the warning light doesn’t work properly. That’s why when you buy pads from Halfords, we’ll always recommend fresh sensors too.
