There are two types of derailleurs: front derailleurs and rear derailleurs. They are a mechanism that works with your shifter to move your bike chain up and down to change gears. Good working derailleurs will make your bike feel smoother and help you shift fast and accurate gears. We sell a range of derailleurs including Shimano derailleurs and SRAM derailleurs.
Derailleurs are as important as bike chains for the longevity of your drivetrain (which consists of pedals, cranks, chain-rings, chain, cassette and derailleurs that push the bike forwards) as they play an important role in helping you change your bike gears.
Whether you’re looking for mountain bike derailleurs designed to take a few knocks from the uneven terrain and work in mud, rain and grit or road bike derailleurs that can work smoothly under pressure, we have you covered.
Halfords sell both front and rear derailleurs for road bikes and mountain bikes available in 7 to 12 speed from top brands like the road cycling specialists Campagnolo.
If it’s your first time adjusting a derailleur, check out our how to adjust the rear derailleur guide for guidance and browse through our bike parts page to shop other drivetrain tools for your bike.
Bike derailleurs FAQs
How to tighten a bike chain with a derailleur?
To tighten a chain on a bike with a derailleur, shift the chain to the smallest front chainring and the smallest rear cog first. Then, test the tension by pulling on the chain in the middle. If it sags excessively, the derailleur spring is probably worn out, or the chain is stretched. In most instances, turning the B-tension screw on the rear derailleur or changing a worn chain will solve this. For single-speed or internally geared bikes, you may need to adjust the wheel position instead. If you are unsure, visit your local Halfords store for some expert help.
What is a derailleur on a bike?
A derailleur is part of your bike's drivetrain system which moves the chain between gears when you shift. There are two fundamental types: the front derailleur, which shifts between chainrings, and the rear derailleur, which moves across the cassette on the rear wheel. A well-functioning derailleur gives smooth, accurate gear changes-crucial to maintaining speed, control, and efficiency on the road or when tackling challenging trails. Shop for bike derailleurs at Halfords for reliable options from top brands, to suit every type of riding.
How to clean bike derailleur?
Clean your derailleur on the bike with a degreaser in order to remove built-up dirt on the jockey wheels and cage. Use an old toothbrush or small brush for scrubbing the harder areas to reach. Then after cleaning, rinse gently with water and dry completely. Complete with the application of lighter lubricating motion parts for proper performance in being free from friction. Regularly cleaning it does not only improve shifting but also makes your drivetrain last longer.
