If your brake bulb needs to be changed, there are certain indicative signs. These can include a dim or flickering brake bulb light, a dashboard warning light, or visibly broken filaments within the bulb. If you notice other drivers flashing you, that’s also a common sign that something is wrong with your vehicle. In the case of any of these signs, you’ll benefit from a brake light replacement service.

The most common types of brake lights are either a single-filament or dual-filament brake bulb. You can insert a dual-filament brake bulb light into a single-filament socket; however, only one filament will work, so brightness level switching will not be possible.

You should consult your car’s manual, as it typically lists the specific brake bulb type required for your brake lights. Although, buying a new brake light bulb is easy with our carefully compiled car bulb buyer’s guide.

Carrying out a break light bulb replacement can be simple and easy. While your owner’s manual will help to show you the exact access point, our guide gives general step-by-step instructions on how to change your brake light bulb.

Firstly, park somewhere safe with the ignition off and open your car's boot so that you can peel back the trim behind the faulty brake light. Be careful not to yank anything out due to the attached wiring. Simply twist the plastic bulb holder (typically a quarter anticlockwise) and pull it from the lamp. You can now remove the old bulb by either pressing it in, twisting and removing, or just pulling it straight out. Be careful not to press too hard or use gloves if the glass is hot. You can now push or twist your new bulb in before refitting the holder by turning clockwise. Retrace your steps and secure all components back in before finally replacing the boot trim. You can now test your brake lights by having a friend watch while you press down on the brake.

If you’d prefer the peace of mind of knowing that a professional has carried out this essential work for you, we offer a car brake light replacement service.
