How does a car thermostat work?

Most car thermostats are around 5cm in diameter, and sit between your car’s engine and radiator. By controlling the flow of coolant between the radiator and the engine, the thermostat reduces friction and allows the engine to run smoothly and efficiently.

What does a thermostat do in a car?

This relatively small, simple, but effective car component is capable of controlling the temperature of your car, which helps to reduce the risk of excessive fuel consumption, engine wear and leaks.

Car thermostat problems

Car thermostats respond to changes in temperature and, like all important car components, can become worn over time. A common sign that your car’s thermostat needs replacing is if it becomes stuck in an open or closed position, preventing the flow of coolant between the radiator and engine.
