Your vehicle's windscreen is an integral component of its shell and needs to be properly maintained. As well as providing you with a clear view of the road, the windscreen will shelter you from the elements and protect you in an accident.

Windscreen chips can appear at any time, obscuring your view and making it dangerous to drive. If you continue to drive with a cracked windscreen, a sudden change in temperature or bump in the road can quickly turn it into a crack. Repairing a cracked windscreen is a much larger and more costly job, so we strongly recommend fixing a chip as soon as it happens.

At Halfords, we're here to help. Our chipped windscreen repair service can get you back on the road as soon as possible. All you need to do is head to your local Halfords store or give them a call to arrange a windscreen repair appointment. We also offer our windscreen chip repair service via our Halfords Mobile Experts, so we can come to you.

Due to the nature of the service, there are a few rules around what size chip we can repair, as well as where on the windscreen the damage is. Unsure about your windscreen? Pop into one of our stores and a colleague will happily assist you.

We’re able to repair most chipped windscreens. However, this does depend on the size, depth and location of the chip and whether there is any further damage to the car's frame.

The rule of thumb is as follows:

  • A chip less than 3mm (smaller than a matchstick head) does not usually need to be repaired.
  • A chip less than 25mm (smaller than a £2 coin) is repairable.
  • A chip over 25mm is usually non-repairable.

If you have a chipped windscreen that needs repairing, head down to your local Halfords store where one of our technicians will assess the damage and help you with the next stage of repair.

Yes, as a windscreen is crucial to a driver's visibility, an MOT takes into consideration the state of your windscreen and the impact any damage may have on the driver's view.

For your car to pass an MOT, the windscreen must not have a chip, larger than 10mm, in the line of your sight while driving. A chip larger than 40mm anywhere else on the windscreen can also result in a failed MOT. Therefore, we advise having your windscreen repaired before an MOT.

We're unable to repair your side window due to the toughened glass that is commonly used. This type of glass is designed to fracture into small pieces, unlike a windscreen which will remain intact upon impact. This means that your side window needs replacing before you can safely drive again.

You may be able to claim for windscreen repair or replacement through your car insurance, though it’s not always covered so be sure to check with your insurer. There can also be setbacks to claiming for windscreen chip repair through insurance, so choosing a third-party like Halfords may be more beneficial.

Choosing a third party for windscreen chip repair is often less hassle than claiming through insurance. There’s the chance that claiming through insurance could affect your no claims discount depending on your insurer and the level of damage sustained. You’re also limited to your choice of windscreen repair companies and, as you’re not going direct, the process can take longer.
