Why does your child need a car seat?
UK law dictates that all children must travel in an appropriately sized car seat until they are 135cm tall or 12-years-old, whichever comes first.
The legislation: R129 vs ECE R44
The R129 standard, known as i-Size, is the most recent and was introduced to make travel for babies and children safer than the ECE R44 standard. R129 and R44 run side by side, so parents can choose whether to buy and use child car seats that meets either standards.
The main changes that i-Size introduces are:
- The baby or child's height is used to determine if the seat fits the child, rather than their weight.
- All babies must be rear-facing in a car seat until they are 76cm and 15 months old. Before 15 months babies necks are not strong enough to withstand the pressure of a head-on collision in the forward-facing position.
- i-Size includes a side impact test to ensure that the seats provide better protection from side impacts.
- Better compatibility with vehicle manufacturers. 'i-Size approved' seating positions mean an i-Size seat is automatically compatible with an i-Size car.
Car seat technology

- Lie-flat seats - Research shows that it’s healthiest for newborn babies to lie flat for the majority of the time when they’re sleeping or lying still for periods. The CYBEX Cloud Z i-Size features an ergonomic lie-flat position outside of the car.
- Reclining Headrests – The CYBEX patented reclining headrest prevents the child's head from falling forward while asleep and guarantees optimal protection in the case of a side-impact.
- Swivel seats – Make life easier and less back breaking for parents due to this handy function. Spin the seat towards the door and secure your child in the seat with less strain on your back from leaning over and reaching in to the car.
- Impact shield - CYBEX recommends travelling in rear-facing car seats for as long as possible, ideally up to the age of 4 but sometimes, there are reasons that require toddlers to be switched to a forward-facing car seat. The benefit of using an impact shield is that the forces of a collision are distributed over the large area of the impact shield, which significantly reduces the strain on the critical neck, shoulders, and head by 40% in comparison to a conventional forward-facing seat with harness system.
